what is regedit?
- Posted by Mike M on March 1st, 2004
Regedit is the Registry Editor and should only be used by those with some
experience and knowledge of what they might be doing since deleting the wrong
key or value can prevent the system from being booted in which case a backup
copy of the registry would need to be restored.

Fortunately there is no need for the user to remember to back up the registry
since Win Me, just as Win 98 and 98SE, automatically makes a backup copy of
the registry the first time the system is booted each day unless the user has
chosen to disable this in MSConfig | Startup. Now lack of a recent backup
could, of course, be a problem for someone leaving their system running 24/7
but given resource problems I suspect most users reboot their systems every
couple of days or so.

Exactly how many copies does my machine make of my registries?
I ran into a situation (about the same time I was discovering this NG) where
I was stuck. Went into Help, clicked the appropriate word to check my
registry, and the gosh darned thing fixed itself.
As I recall, when I used to work for some integrator, these files end in
*.dat ?
Thanks in advance,
mr.curious

By default five, a copy being made the first time a PC is booted on any
particular day. Whilst it is easy to increase that number SCANREG /RESTORE
will still only show the most recent five copies. Note that each system
restore checkpoint is also in fact a copy of the registry made at the
time/date of the checkpoint.
Ignoring system restore, the backed up copies of the registry are the
rb00?.cab files in the windows\sysbckup folder. The three registry hives each
have a dat extension, classes.dat, system.dat and user.dat.

There it is.... Thank you!
Not sure what good it will do me to know where they are, but right as rain,
there they are.
Thanks!

To restore to one of the five backed up copies of the registry, boot to DOS
using a floppy and then at the A:\> DOS prompt enter the command
SCANREG /RESTORE
You will then be asked which of the five most recent copies to restore.
Cheers,
