Try doing it from Safe Mode or download this program developed by Koldbear
(who is sadly missed) and associates.
Joan

Get the free ScanDefrag. It is the most advanced disk maintenance
program there is. It runs Disk Cleanup, ScanDisk, and Disk
Defragmenter. It's easy to setup and use, and it can deal with
problems like "drive's contents have changed: restarting...".
Get it and read about all the options it has that you can use.
http://home.earthlink.net/~bblanton2...efrag/main.htm
http://www.blueorbsoft.com/scandefrag/index.html

It is not unusual to see Defrag restart a number of times.
It is , however, unusual to see ScanDisk restart.
This is why I suggest starting it at bedtime and letting it run overnight.
Please, email "The ScanDefrag Team" if you have any problems using our
program. Your problem, will be properly attended to. And we assure you,
that every attempt will be made to resolved it..
To see how to email us, read the ScanDefrag "Readme" file, using
ScanDefrag
under the "Help" menu.

Have the same problem too.
Restart in Safe mode and run the defragment process is the easieat way out.

Try it in Safe Mode.
Restart and start tapping on the F8 key when the logo appears. This
will
bring you to a black screen with a number of options. Select #3. The
next
screen should be your desktop, but it will be either fuzzy or in a
different
colour, and should have the words Safe Mode printed on the 4 corners
of the screen. At this point, proceed with a Scan and/or Defrag. Once
finished, restart so that you return to Normal mode.
If for whatever reason that does not solve your problem, try a
different
program by downloading either GeoDisk from
http://mvps.org/PracticallyNerded/Files/GEODisk.zip

or ScanDefrag from http://www.blueorbsoft.com/scandefrag/

Both of these programs are free and appear to manage the closing
process of any open
program, so that ScanDisk and/or Defrag can run uninterupted.

Good Luck

Had the same problem.

Alt-Ctl-Del and bring up the task dialog box
End every task except
Explorer and System tray
do your scandisk and defrag then restart.

or

get to safe mode. (tap on F8 or I think Ctl key) while booting.
