System crash on shutdown
Posted by Solitary Soul on August 18th, 2003

Hi Gang,

I'm having a problem with Windoze ME (Monstrously Evil) crashing
on shut-down. When I hit the shut-down button, I get the cute
little musical score for shut-down, my icons clear, the screen
goes blank, and then I get a screen-full of vertical black
and yellow bars. It was happening only once in a while,
but, over the past few days, it's happening every time
I shut-down my system (it's gotten progressively worse).

My system board is an ECS K7S5A-Pro, with an
AMD Athlon 1.1GHz, 256MB RAM, with an 80GB Maxtor.

Any ideas on how I can find out what is causing this problem?

Thanks,

Hello,

Some information about your video card would be helpful. As the shutdown
feature in Windows is flaky at best, problems are expected on occasion, but
since you say it's gotten worse, I don't think that it's the problem. Have
you started leaving your computer on longer? Have you upgraded recently
before it got worse? Has the temperature or moisture in the room your
computer is in consistently stayed above what your computer is used to? This
may also be a hardware problem, but I'm not very sure on that. Maybe someone
else with more experience here could help you more.

Hi Jonathan,

I'm experiencing a similar problem. When I
select "shutdown" the system goes through its normal
sequence and then the screen goes blank. I don't get the
black and yellow vertical lines, but the screen does goes
blank/black (but it's still on since I can see the scan).

If I cntl-alt-del nothing happens. If I leave the machine
as is it eventually just reboots itself.

Reboot and Sleep operate normally. The system operates
normally in every other manner.

This started about 1 month or 2 ago. I update ME about
that time as well.

Don't know if this is the same or different problem.

Thanks,

Jeff

Not really.

I have to reboot every time it crashes - once or twice a day.

Hummm...

I DID download the latest service packs from Micro$oft.
THIS is a possibility.

Nothing's changed in this regard.

Thanks for the response!

This COULD BE the same problem.

I'm thinking about going to Windows 2000 Pro.

Hello,

Hmm...this is interesting. I have an AOpen TNT2 M64, and as soon as anything
temperature/humidity-wise rises, the computer starts to reset itself and
freeze with odd-coloured lines at the very top of the screen. Jeff, what
video card do YOU have? If you've got a TNT2 as well, maybe it's something
we should be talking to nVidia about. Do the hard drives whir down at all,
or is everything the same apart from the screen? Solitary, is your card an
AGP or PCI card? Do you use Albatron's drivers or nVidia's? I have the
latest nVidia OEM drivers right now, with Windows ME fully updated. And if
you do decide to go to W2KPro, Solitary, good luck.
