- Turn off cascading menus
- Posted by Jim on March 6th, 2004
I just reinstalled ME after a system crash and I can't
figure out how to turn off the damned cascading menus. By
cascading menus I mean that when you choose a menu such as
FILE you don't seee all of the menu items unless you click
on the double arrow at the bottom of the menu.
I HATE the "feature" and can't find out how to turn it off
anywhere within the mess that Microsoft calls online
support. I tried calling the support number listed at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;en-
us;Prodoffer39&sd=GN which says you have two support calls
free of charge and was told that, no, despite what the Web
site says you have to pay Microsoft for support.
Can anyone tell me how to do this? I know you can because
I had it disabled previously. I just can't remember how I
did it.

Do you mean "personalized menus"? If so then Start | Settings | Taskbar &
Start Menu and on the General tab uncheck "use personalized menus".

I already tried that and rebooted. I still only get
partial menus with a double arrow at the bottom that has
to be clicked to review menu items that I haven't used
recently.

You also have to uncheck "scroll..." onder advanced in taskbar and start
menu properties. but since you mention "file" menu, I think the setting may
be in the application you are using,eg., in Office it is in Tools > Options
in any of the component apps. HTH

Thanks, actually it wasn't under options, it turned out to
be under FILE->CUSTOMIZE in office. Just glad I was able
to turn off this extremely annoying "feature".
