Uninstalled Internet Explorer..
Posted by Tony McCanless on July 20th, 2003

Internet Explorer is an integral part of Windows. It shares many of the same
components as Windows Explorer. You can't really uninstall it, but you can
revert to an earlier version. If you, in your attempt to uninstall, deleted
its folder, you may attempt to boot into Safe Mode and do a System Restore.
There are ways to also do a System Restore from a boot floppy. However, I'm
not sure what all you deleted. It may be necessary to reinstall Windows ...
or install IE from a CD. Some AOL CDs come with IE.

I uninstalled Internet Explorer because there was
something wrong with it that occurred from downloading
something I shouldn't have. However, I did not know that
Internet Explorer was what everything on my computer runs
off of.. when I start up my computer I only get a blank
desktop.. no icons, no start menu, not anything. I don't
want to lose everything by reinstalling Windows, plus I
don't have a disk, but I don't know how to get anything
up to reinstall IE. What do I do?

All AOL CD's come with a variety of IE's - they will generally install the
latest compatible version available at the start of the testing cycle for
the AOL version - so AOL7 will install IE5.5SP? on a Win ME system, or IE5
on a Win95 system.
I'm not sure what version of IE AOL8 ships with (don't have a disk handy,
and it'd be UK anyhow), but I suspect that it's IE6 (without the SP).

Unfortunately, this problem (blank screen after removing IE6) seems to be
becoming rather common - and the only guaranteed solution I know of is to
reinstall ME over-the-top.
To do this, boot with a Startup floppy, and type the following commands at
the A:\> prompt

C:\
CD \WINDOWS\OPTIONS\CABS (Note the space after 'CD')
DIR BASE2.CAB
If it comes up with the filename, then type SETUP, and you should be
starting the install procedure.
If it comes up with 'File Not Found' - then do the following
CD \WINDOWS\OPTIONS\INSTALL
DIR BASE2.CAB
It should find the file - then type SETUP, and the install should begin..
