- WDM.DLL Error
- Posted by JSomers on February 25th, 2004
Hey,
When I start Windows ME and it begins to load the
taskbar and my toolbar it stops and comes up with the
error "Explorer has caused an error in WDM.DLL, Explorer
will now close. If you continue to experience..." and it
doesn't allow me to click anything except close. So I do
and it doesn't load up anything more and in the Task
Manager it doesn't show anything.
Much appreciated if you could help.

You almost certainly have an unwanted virus or parasite.
Win Me contains no file named wdm.dll. I suspect however that you have a
trojan or parasite on your PC since there have been a number of similar
reports in the last few days of users having problems with a file named
WDM<random characters>.DLL which in itself is suspicious although yours is the
first where the file is apparently just named wdm.dll.
If you haven't already done so I would strongly recommend that you check your
system for possible viruses using your preferred anti virus application
equipped with an updated set of viral signatures. However you might first
want to check your PC using one of the online virus checks such as McAfee's
online checker (http://us.mcafee.com/root/mfs/default.asp) or Trend Micro's
Housecall (http://housecall.antivirus.com).
I would also urge you to check for possible commercial parasites, spyware and
other assorted adware. This might be a good time to download yourself a copy
of the free Ad-Aware 6.0 from Lavasoft
(http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/) and also SpyBot
(http://www.safer-networking.org/) and scan your system for and remove all
unwanted parasites, adware and spyware that might be hiding on your PC.

Rename the file WDM.DLL to WDM.BAK, then your system should start normally.
You may need to do this from Safe Mode. When that's done, updated ATI video
drivers should solve the problem and allow you to rename WDM.DLL back again.

Richard,
Are ATI drivers the reason for the six or seven reports in the last few days
where the file involved was named WDM<random chars>?

I don't know about the WDM<random filename> errors, but there are some
versions of the ATI Radeon drivers that cause problems with the WDM loader
when installed improperly.

Ah thanks. Where does wdm.dll come in? Is that an ATI file since it isn't,
AFAIK, included as part of Win Me or is this a case of an internal file name
being displayed in the error message rather than the visible file name?

Many thanks guys!

I believe it's part of the ATI driver set, their WDM loader DLL. But I
could be wrong, I don't actually own one; that's what Google and some fancy
footwork indicated.

Thanks Richard,
I don't think that ATI are currently using a wdm.dll file with recent versions
of their drivers although may have previously as I can't find a file with that
name on the boxes here with ATI graphics card.
Cheers,

You're probably right, which is undoubtedly why the recommended fix is to
install the latest drivers. ;-)

LOL. Not that I may be right, I rarely am nowadays, but more at the
recommended fix. :-)
