- what caused it?

I downloaded updates for Windows for 40 minutes and when
it was completed it failed to install. Why is this so?

tyre blue,
If you are trying to do the updates using the AOL browser they will not
install. This is a known issue with the AOL browser. Advise you to click
the Windows Update icon on the Start Menu or open Internet Explorer,
click Tools, then Windows Update.
If you are using Norton, McAfee, or PC-cillin for an antivirus,
temporarily disable it and their script blocking component prior to
accessing the Windows Update site, downloading, and installing updates.
Reenable it after installation and any required rebooting.
