- where all does Win ME hide garbage files
- Posted by Dick on March 5th, 2004
Hi,
I just deleted 9999 0 bite junk files from the Win\INF folder. I could not
install the Win updates, it was so bad. I believe this is one of Win ME
shortcomings. It does not completely delete garbage files.
I know Windows keep a lot of files in the temp files that can be deleted,
but how about folders, and how about setup files, and what else? Where else
does Win Millennium horde garbage files, that slows it down and keeps it
from installing Win updates, that can be deleted?

Your problem with the zero byte inf files was almost certainly caused by using
one of the many garbage programs produced by Symantec, namely Norton System
Destroyer.

Mike, you are absolutely correct, and thanks for your quick response. But
now that I know this, I can keep an eye open for this problem, but that
still does not answer my original question.

Win Me stores no "garbage files" that prevent users from installing Windows
Updates.

Not that Win Me doesn't create files which many might consider to be useless.
A prime example being the configuration history files periodically produced by
winmgmt.exe (launched by the pchschd.exe entry in the Task Scheduler).
However these files shouldn't have any effect on the installation of any
update. Another area is that of system restore, another part of Win Me that
is frequently destroyed by Symantec applications that can lead to the
C:\_RESTORE\TEMP folder getting filled with thousands of CPY files - much in
the same way that the windows\inf folder gets filled with the zero byte
oem*.inf files.

He might also want to check to see what date his computer is on. If it's on
a future date, Windows Update will freak out.

Probably wouldn't be useless if we had access to a reader program. Hell,
it'd be useful even (grep the file for any instances of the word "Norton
