Windows ME crash
Posted by on March 1st, 2004

Bought my Compaq Presario just over 3 years ago. Lately it
has been crashing frequently and recently, I tried to do a
system restore. The system restore failed in mid-cylce and
now many programs and files are missing. Sound board won't
work even after relaoding drivers....when I reload quick
cam, it says that some windows files are missing and won't
load.

The computer came preloaded with WIN ME and I don't have
cd's for it. I want to upgrade to WIN XP but am worried it
won't upgrade properly if WIN ME isn't complete.

Any suggestions?

Suggestions? - not until you've answered a few questions!<g>

1) How far back did you attempt to restore?
2) When you attempted to restore - did you get any error messages>> - what
were they?
3) (just in case) The System Restore you did - it *was* a Windows System
Restore (from either MSInfo32, Help&Support, or the Start Menu)?? - and not
a System recovery (using any Recovery disks that came with the PC)??

You're correct in thinking that it's not normally a good idea to try and
upgrade an OS that has problems - but the upgrade from Win9x to XP *may* be
an exception, as the complete file system is unloaded before being upgraded.
Whatever you decide to do, it's essential that you back up your data
first!!!
