Windows ME will not boot in Normal or Safe Mode
Posted by Brian on September 1st, 2003

I downloaded and installed DirectX 9.0b via windows
update this evening. After download and installation
completed, a computer reboot was requested.

After rebooting the computer, windows failed to load.
The ME logo splash came up and the computer just sat
still.

I tried rebooting into safe mode and the same thing
happens. If I Esc the logo the windows load process
states that Setup is updating system configuration files,
but nothing happens.

I have booted with my floppy and ran scandisk /all as
well as the registry checker. The first time I ran
regcheck it found a registry error and restored to a good
registry. Since that point the computer will still not
boot and the registry checker says the registry is fine.

I then reinstalled windows to no avail. The reinstall
went fine, found the hardware, etc. When the install was
completed I was asked to reboot and was still unable to
get past the logo screen.

Any suggestions?

This is part of the danger of updating DirectX every time a new version comes
out. For some reason, parts of your system are not fully compatible with the
new beta version of DirectX.

You will need to reload Windows I'm afraid.
