Windows Millinium Freezes
Posted by Rodney on August 7th, 2003

I have a user with this OS and he could be working on
anything and the os freezes up on him. CTRL ALT Del
doesn't work. He has to unplug his system and restart it.
Not sure why this is happening? I realize I should switch
the OS to Win 2000 pro but in the interum how do I correct
this problem?

Thank you to whom ever responds.......

This could be a number of issues. Might be a driver problem or a hardware
problem. If the user can't toggle the num lock key when system does the holy
freeze, it's most likely a hardware problem.

Consider running a memory check, verifying bios settings, a little cleaning
+ whether any cooling fans are dead. Docmem at
http://www.simmtester.com/PAGE/products/doc/docinfo.asp is probably the best
non-hardware floppy boot utility for a memory check. Consider reseating
peripheral cards and inspecting CPU as well. More often than not, the
manufacturer's have a diagnostic utility for their hardware. As far as the
motherboard is concerned, a bios update might be an option. Note that you
should verify the PSU for a proper wattage specification for the load on the
system.

If num lock toggles at freeze, hold power button 4 seconds to shut down.
Boot to safe mode. In safe mode's device manager, delete the video adapter.
Reboot to normal mode. If PnP doesn't automatically detect the video card
AND reinstall the driver without prompting for location, the original driver
was not correctly installed. Take the time to run msconfig and verify what
is starting / launching with unit.
