WOn't download update information
Posted by Keith on March 6th, 2004

When I select Start/Windowss Update my PC won't go beyond
the point where the sceen says it's seeking any updates.
It just hangs there????

What could be causing this??? I'm using Windows ME.

See if any of this helps courtesy of MowGreen.

Which antivirus program are you using ? If it's Norton, McAfee, or
PC-cillin, then the activeX script blocking component is either
corrupting the software controls or damaging it's installation. Advise
you to temporarily disable the AV program completely during the update
process ... this includes the time you first access Windows Update up
until the require rebooting necessary to finish the installation.
Reenable it afterwards.

If this isn't the cause, suggest you open the Windows Update.log found
in the WINDOWS folder with Notepad. Scroll down to the last 20 -30 lines
for the most recent entries and locate any error code associated with
the last failed attempt to access Windows Update. Then go here :
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/
and search for it under the " Problem reaching Windows Update " heading.
Try the suggested resolution(s).

I had a problem with getting updates also (not exactly like yours)
but what I had to do with Internet Explorer
was Tools/Internet Options
on the General tab
click on Languages button
and insure
a language (English) was selected.
