- Adding HDTV Tuner to dual analog tuner setup
- Posted by CurtMcNamee on January 16th, 2006
Hello everyone,
I currently have a MCE 2005 box with an analog Hauppage PVR-500MCE dual
tuner card in it that works just beaufitully. My wife bought me an HDTV as
an annaversary present (yes I am lucky man). I am wondering if MCE will let
me add a HDTV Tuner (I heard someplace that you can only add like tuners to a
system), and if there is anyway to tell the machine that to only record HD
content with the HDTV tuner (no point in recording HD content with an old
analog tuner).
Anyone have any thoughts on this issue? Thanks for the advice!

I need to add a little information. The HD content I will be watching will
be coming over the broadcast channels via a HD antenna on my roof. All the
rest of my content comes through my cable tv provider (they offer very poor
HD programming compared to what I can get through an antenna...very sad).
Thanks again!

MCE 2005, with Update Rollup 2 installed, supports up to two analog tuners and up to two over the air HDTV tuners. Media Center will automatically choose the correct tuner type for the content.

Thanks for the info, it's still crazy to think that MCE can have 2 different
channel line-ups (one of the over-the-air programming & one for cable
programming), but if it can do that, all the better.
I currently have my DVR that I will be shoving this HD Tuner into in another
room of the house, and I have been using the Media Center Extender for the
Xbox (not 360). I am assuming that if I get the Xbox High Definition AV
Pack, it will not be the same if I had the DVR directly connected to the HDTV
via the DVI port, right? If this is the case, woudl you recommend I move the
DVR to be directly connected to the HDTV?
Thanks for your help!

Unfortunately, you will be unable to stream HD content from your MCE box
through your Xbox 1 w/ extender kit. You will be able to stream SD content
without a problem. In order to stream HD content, it will require an XBox
360; as it is the only media center extender that supports HD content.
If this is not an option, you can hook your pc up directly to your tv.

I was wondering about that. Oh well I guess I get to build another DVR for
my living room.
Thanks everyone for your help,
Curt
PS: Could you recommend an HD Tuner, I am looking at the AVerMedia AVerTVHD
MCE A180 HDTV PCI card. Anyone used it or could recommend something better
or cheaper?

Two AverTVHD tuners will work just fine in the WMCE. In fact, Avermedia
has designed and released special drivers for this very configuration:
2 in one box.
As for whether you can put two ATI HDTV Wonders in one box, I don't
know, but I doubt it.
As for two Fusion 5's in one box, someone else should answer that.
I do know that one ATI HDTV Wonder and one AverTVHD will work
side-by-side in one WMCE box.

2 ATI HDTV wonders will not work in a single machine. (If they do please
tell me how)
I'm currently using a ATI HDTV Wonder and a AverTVHD in a single machine
with out any real issues.
