Another decoder question
Posted by gmanfan on January 7th, 2006

I, too, am getting decoder error messages. It doesn't matter what kind of DVD
I play, XP media won't play it. I have PowerDVD and as long as I go in
through that I can watch videos but XP Media won't let me play. I've
downloaded the check up and I have 2 installed decoders. Both are Cyberlink
Video. 1 has a yellow triangle with "!" in it and says it's not compatible
with Media Player 10. 5.0.0.1031 MCE Compatible. The other has a green check
and is the Cyberlink Video 6.0.0.818 MCE compatible Preferred decoder. Since
this one is checked it says no further action is necessary.

As long as I use something else to play video I can watch but I DON"T want
to do that since I just bought this computer and it should work.

I experienced the same issue out of the box, with my Gateway Media center
7200. MC would not play or record DVDs. I fixed the issue, by downloading
and installing the latest trial version of PowerDVD off of their website,
then un-installed it. That removed the program, but upgraded the MC decoder
components (even though I un-installed it). It worked from then on.

Give it a shot!

Do I then reinstall my old PowerDVD cd? I have an external DVD burner that I
bought right before I bought the new computer. Thanks

No, that should not be necessary. I have however for another issue,
reinstalled the orginal software from the recovery CD, and it did NOT
over-write the updated decoder files.

Well, I uninstalled the trial version but then it never worked. I had to
reinstall PowerDVD from my CD for my external drive. So far things are
working fine. Hopefully no more problems. Thanks
