Sadly, it sounds to me like a possible hardware failure, either in your
hard drive or your RAM.
However, it could be many things other than what I guessed.
First, if it is hardware, stop using your computer. Especially, don't
write to disk - even bad RAM could mess your drive up by corrupting
data before it is written.
If possible, back up your hard drive now - and if it is a hard drive
problem, the best way to back it up would be to install it as an extra
drive in another computer, either internally or via a USB2 or FireWire
adapter, and use that other computer to run the backup.
There are also downloadable memory testers that run from a boot floppy
(or if necessary from a boot CD if you can make one).
http://www.simmtester.com
http://www.memtest86.com
or whatever you can find on your favorite download site or via Google.
Note: with problems that seem to me similar to yours, I have tested my
memory for hours each with both of these testers without a failure, yet
my computer got healthy after changing out the RAM.
HTH,
Gino
