ATSC tuners only with Rollup 2
Posted by Joe Barnes on December 2nd, 2005

Does Rollup 2 allow the installation of only HD tuners? I currently have a SD
tuner card installed just so I can get through the TV setup. I would like to
build another MCE machine with 2 HD and no SD tuners.

You still need the NTSC card in place (officially).

However, some people have gotten around this using unsupported methods.

I'm using on my machine ATI HDTV Wonder only and it is working. This tuner
supports both ATSC and NTSC. ATI driver is designed well, so Media Center
can see this card as 2 tuners and it can setup NTSC and ATSC channels. Even
if a tuner was only ATSC I think it would be possible to fool Media Center
with proper driver. Media Center must think there is NTSC tuner installed.

The other option is install NTSC and ATSC tuner, setup Media Center and then
change channel to ATSC and close MC. It will remember that last used channel
was ATSC - this is important ! Remove NTSC tuner from the machine. When you
start Media Center, Live TV will start on ATSC because it can remember the
last used channel. ATSC should work, but if you try to setup TV signal again
it would probably display a message "Tuner Not Found". And of course if
you'll try to change channel to NTSC Media Center would probably crash. It
isn't optimal solution, but I have no other idea.

Robert,
I would like to know how you were able to get both of the tuners on the ATI
HDTV Wonder working in Windows Media center 2005. I did not think this was
possible. ATI has yet to respond to a single question I have ever asked
about this card, so I had to use a second NTSC tuner card to use the HDTV
Wonder in media center 2005. Do you know if ATI will ever release a driver
that will support more then one HDTV wonder in a machine? A question I have
seen asnwered on this group but one that has been ignored by ATI.

I don't know if they're going to release driver which would support 2 HDTV,
but I think it isn't possible. HDTV wonder supports NTSC and ATSC. Of course
you cannot record on NTSC and ATSC at the same time nor watch on one and
record the other). The important think is that Media Center can see this as
2 tuners. If you install 2 HDTV wonder, maybe you would be able to install
drivers, but for Media Center it is like having 4 tuners installed and that
is the problem I think.
As a maximum you can have 2 NTSC and 1 ATSC tuner. You cannot have 1 NTSC
and 2 ATSC (or 2 NTSC and 2 ATSC).
If you have 2 HDTV Wonder cards you can try what happens. I guess you'll
have 2 NTSC and 1 ATSC, second ATSC will not be available.

This is EXACTLY what I want to do but have had no success. I have the ATI
HDTV Wonder (only one) and have downloaded the latest ATI drivers for MCE. I
can not get past the "Need and NTSC Tuner" error. I only want to receive DTV
and do not want to load another tuner card into my PC. How can I do it?

Due to MCE's architecture, you need to have an NTSC tuner for a supported
configuration.
See here for an explanation.

A Brief History of ATSC in Media Center

There are unsupported ways to do what you want, but if you run into issues,
you're basically on your own. See here for a starting point..

The following instructions were taken from thegreenbutton.com. I dont know
what the exact link is, so here are the details to get a single ATI HDTV
Wonder working in MCE 2005 with out a NTSC tuner.

--------------------

1. Install MCE -
1a. Install Motherboard drivers
1b. Install graphics card drivers

2. Install MCE rollup1 - windowsxpmediacenter2005-kb873369-enu.exe

3. Install Nvidia DVD decoder - Download nvdvd v1.00.67

4. Install ATI HDTV wonder MCE driver (download from ATI site, install this
driver before inserting the ATI HDTV card)

5. Insert the ATI HDTV card, let windows detects the card (reboot)

Below is the hack that allows ATI HDTV works with MCE as a stand alone
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

6. Obtain KRAM driver, and unzip. Go to ATI_KRAM\MCE4.10kv\MCEE -
(http://www.jayntguru.com/kram/MCE4.10kv.zip )then run setup.exe, reboot.

7. Go to ATI_KRAM\MCE4.10kv\eHomeAIW - then run setup.exe, reboot.

8. Open Device Manager and look for "ATI HDTV Wonder Digital and Analog
Tuner Device"

right click then select Update Driver... select "No at this time" click
next...select "Install from a specific locaction (Advance)" click
next....select "Don't search, I will chose..." click next.... click "Have
disk" then point to ATI_KRAM\MCE4.10kv\eHomeAIW\WDM_XP

Now select "ATI WDM Rage Theater Video".... and install this when prompt hit
OK. Reboot.

9. Now go back to Device Manager, under "ATI WDM Rage Theater Video" there
is an yellow exclaimation, righ click -> properties -> Driver then click
"Roll Back Driver" button. Reboot.
10. Now start MCE, and begin the TV set up procedure.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Good luck,
Jay
