Can I watch HDTV thru my XBOX 360?
Posted by coquitlam_jeff on March 12th, 2006

I have my XBOX 360 set up as MCE extender and it works fine. Now I want to
take it to the next level.

- Currently I have my HDTV cable box connected directly to my HDTV. Works
fine.

- I also have my Media Center PC connected to the TV thru the XBOX360, and
it's working fine, too.

- However, since my HDTV cable box is connected directly to my HDTV (and not
to the PC) I can't record any of the HD channels using Media Centre... I can
only record the standard channels available through the standard cable
package. That is okay, but not ideal.

- Now I want to set things up so that my HDTV cable box connects to my PC
(so that I can record anything that I want, including HDTV channels, using
Media Center) and then everything - including HDTV stuff - can be played on
my HDTV through the XBOX 360.

Here are my questions:

1. Will it depend on the quality of my TV Tuner card determine whether I am
able to even send an HDTV signal to my PC? Will an S-video input support
HDTV? What about co-axial cable?

2. If it'll work, will my wired 100mbps ethernet cable support HDTV back
through the XBOX, with surround sound and everything? It doesn't seem to me
that it would work. If S-video and ethernet cables will support HDTV, why
does everyone recommend component cables, etc.

I'd love to get some feedback on this so that I know whether or not I'm on
the right track. Please get back to me when you have a moment. Thanks!

Can't do it. You can only record HD OTA (over the air).

Currently MCE only supports Over The Air HDTV for reception of your local
channels using an antenna and a special tuner card, thus it unfortunately
will not matter if you hook up your HDTV Set Top Box to the PC or not.

That said if you installed a Digital tuner card into your PC the 360 would
be able to play your OTA HDTV just fine.
