Can't connect XBox Media Center Extender
Posted by David B on February 9th, 2006

I've been trying to connect my XBox (original version) with the extender
software to my MCE machine. At the point after plugging in my 8 digit ID
where it

is trying to contact the MCX, it says connecting... and then fails. I
checked the DvcConn.log and see the following:
10:31:54 PM : Starting affiliation.

10:31:56 PM : Waiting for visibility status.

10:31:57 PM : Waiting for security codes exchange status.

************************************************** *********
ERROR
************************************************** *********
Security code exchange timed out.

I assumed this was a firewall issue, so I disabled the Windows Onecare
firewall, uninstalled Onecare, turned off the regular firewall, bought a new
wireless

AP to increase signal strength (it's now listed as 'excellent' on the XBox),
uninstalled MCX software from the PC, uninstalled the MCX software from the

extender, tried the 360 setup (XboxMCELite-ENU.exe), and still get the same
problem.

I did a network trace and the PC and XBox extender are communicating to a
point. I see the extender sending out the beacon packets:

4 2.750000 0050F21616F5 *BROADCAST UDP IP Multicast: Src Port: Unknown,

IP

Then MCE replies with:

At this point there is a 10 second pause and then the whole process repeats
one time, again failing with a pause at the end.

Any ideas as to what would cause this?

Please check the Application, System, and Security Event Viewer logs (right
click My Computer --> Manage) for any errors corresponding to the time that
you tried to connect and then post them here.

Followed by an Error:

I ran a network trace from a third machine just to make sure that I saw all
traffic between the MCE and MCX machines. It too shows a TCP sync packet
coming from the MCE machine and the MCX never responding. I don't know if
that is because there is something wrong with the XBox or if there is some
part of the initial handshake that's done over UDP broadcasts that the MCX
didn't like.

Hi,

I've read in other posts regarding an Update Disk ver 1.01 for Media
Center Extender for Xbox (original). Does this exist and how does one
go about requesting it? It seems to have solved at least one other
poster's problems.

thanks

Doug

Does DSWL-Lang NC means something to you? If so, I have your logs and will
take a look...
