- Component Registration Failure
- Posted by Dom on February 22nd, 2008
I am having a big problem. After an Automatic Update was pushed down to my
computer on or around Feb 14, 2008, Windows Media Center stopped working for
me. I am getting "Component Registration Failure. Some of the files needed
to play radio or video are missin or corrupt. Windows Media Center component
registration may have failed." I have tried registering the components based
on some instructions I was given by Microsoft. I have tried two reinstalls
of Vista (one with the TV tuner card removed). I always get the same error.
If I go through the setup of Media Center from scratch I can get all the way
through the application finding my TV signal, but then it will not find my IR
device to control the cable box.
I'm not getting much help from tech support or the knowledge base.
There has to be a way to wipe old settings and registry entries out. I have
verified that my hardware is functional.

These are the instructions I was given that did not work
regsvr32 atl.dll
cd C:\WINDOWS\eHome
ehSched /unregServer
ehSched /service
ehRecvr /unregServer
ehRecvr /service
ehRec.exe /unregServer
ehRec.exe /regserver
ehmsas.exe /unregServer
ehmsas.exe /regserver
Run as administrator in a command window.
Settin up a new user id (as an administrator) and trying to set up Media
Center similarly did not work

Tried that already.
Reinstalled the OS twice using their "upgrade" method. Did not work either
because settings are retained.
I did a paid support incident with Microsoft and that was a waste of time.
I'm convinced Microsoft doesn't know enough about their own application to
have actually put it on a DVD -- or they laid off the people who actually
wrote the application and lost the instructions.
I'm looking for other options to record TV shows. This application is just
a waste of time to use. The manufacturer doesn't know enough about it to
support it. It's a shame.
