- Critical update doesn't install
- Posted by Miffed with MS on January 9th, 2006
Am I the only one having problems installing the latest critical update for
media center? When I try to run Q815487_WxP_SP2_i386_ENU.exe it tells me it
can't install the patch as 'The package does not apply to the operating
system you are running'!
My OS is Windows XP Media Center Edition Version 5.1 SP2 and the link I used
for the update:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Is the update possibly already included in SP2? It looks like the date of KB
article it refers to is older than the date of SP2.

If you have SP2, then it already includes this.
The only OS that update applies to is MCE 2002, not MCE2004 (included in
SP2) or MCE2005.

Thanks Marvin and Jason for the info, that's a great help. Shame about the
error message however.

What's wrong with the error message?
The patch doesn't apply to the OS you are running since you are beyond the
version that the patch is looking for.

Well Jason to my way of thinking the message " 'The package does not apply to
the operating system you are running' implies that I am trying to install say
a WIN2K patch onto XP for example.
Do you not think that a more correct message would be 'This patch has
already been applied' ?

The message is telling you not to try installing it. Isn't that sufficient?

The message led me to create this thread. I found it confusing.
