- D link DI-784 router
- Posted by MGriff on March 12th, 2006
I have a D Link DI-784 a/g router. In the past month or so, the router loses
connection to internet. If I disconnect the router and go to a conventional
cable internet connection, everything is fine so my modem is ok.
The router has a wired connection to desktop pc. I use the A band for media
center extender (Linksys WMCE54AG) and G band for notebook.
D-link tech support had me disable the A band, and run the extender on the G
band. It works ok and I do not lose connection, but do not understand why the
use of the A band is causing problems. I've been using it since April '05
with few problems, so why did this just start? I think I have a bad router,
and should be able to do this the way I want to do it instead of just
bypassing something that isn't working.
Has anyone had any conflicts using both A and G together?

I never sae this with my DI-784. You imply that this only started
happening in the past month or so. What changed on your network? Who
is your ISP? What do the logs show?

Yes, this has been going on for about one month. Up until then, I had been
running the same media center extender and notebook adapter since April '05
with few problems. I have made no network changes, which is one reason this
has been frustrating. My first assumption was that Comcast cable was the
reason. However , after contacting them, found their logs showed no
disconnects.
I cannot get any info from the di-784 logs that has anything about this. I
can be running G only, but when I go back into configuration and enable the A
band, connection is lost, and I cannot access the logs. At this point, the
configuration is showing me "device is restarting" , but it never does. I can
restore the connection by power cycling the router and modem and rebooting
pc. The connection will be ok for anywhere from minutes to an hour, and is
lost again.
As I'm writing this, G band only is enabled. I can disable A and all is ok,
but when I try to enable A, connection is lost.
When I have a connection running both A and G, here's what the router lights
are doing:
Power - on
status - blinking
wan - blinking
11a - blinking
11g - blinking
Local port 1 - on, 2-4 off
When I disconnect:
power - on
status - off
wan - on steady/not blinking
11a - off
11g - off
Local ports 1-4, all are on and steady, port 1 is the only one used.
The D-Link support summary e-mailed to me follows:
- Informed that he has all four port lights lit
- Informed that WAN, WLAN not lit
- Inquired as to whether he has had and power outages within his area
- Informed that he has not
- Checked for a vaild IP address (169.254.x.x)
- Advised to obtain a paper clip in order to perform a reset on the router
(10 secs)
- Checked the lights on the router (WAN, WLAN not lit, all four ports lit)
- Advised to connect his router into another power outlet (done)
- Checked the lights on the router (good)
- Checked for a default gateway address (192.168.0.1)
- Advised to connect an ethenet cable into WAN port and port 1 (done)
- Checked the lights on the router (WAN and port 1 lit)
- Inquired as to what device is running on the wireless A network
- Informed that he has a Linksys WMCE-54AG
- Advised to connect his computer back into port 1 (done)
- Advised to connect his modem into WAN port (done)
- Checked the lights on the router (WAN and port 1 lit)
- Logged onto the router 192.168.0.1 (success)
- Disabled 802.11a mode (done)
- Suggested to monitor the light activity on his network if the problem
persist
Hopefully there may be something here that tells you something. Thanks for
the reply.

what version firmware is in your router? Is it 2.38? The US site looks
like it is having trouble, but you can get it from the Canadian
support site if you need it
http://support.dlink.ca/ProductView....D=314#firmware
Let me know what firmware you've been using.
One other thing, try changing the channel on the 802.11a side - I
remember vaguely some weird behavior when using one3 of the channels
(can't remember which)

Barb
Version 2.38 is the current firmware.
I went into router configuration, turned 802.11a back on. Channel auto
select was checked, so I unchecked that, clicked the drop-down box, but
channel 52 was the only selection there.
Thanks

that's definitely not right. can you do a complete factory reset of
the router and then go in and immediately try to reconfigure the
802.11a side first? you should have a choice of channels.

I did the reset and lost the connection. I got everything going again and
changed channel to 40 (there were others to choose from). The connection
lasted about 10 minutes then went back to same status as before. I've
disabled wireless A for now.
Thanks

last night and a Linksys extender running on 802.11a and it is still
up this morning.

Hi Barb
I tried channel 64, with pretty much the same result as before when I
changed the channel.
The connection was good for 15 minutes, then was lost with the A band enabled.
Do you think this may just be a router failure?

could be. you might want to try the DLink forum on dslreports.com to
see if others have had anything similar.

I checked dslreports and didn't find a lot. But one interesting thing,
there is a firmware version 2.39 available for DI-784 on D-Link Taiwan and
Australia websites, but not US. V 2.38 still shows as the current version on
US site.
If I were to download and use this version, would I be jeopardizing my
warranty or losing any option to return the router?
Thanks very much for all you replies. I appreciate your help.

i would think it would void the warranty if you apply firmware not
designed for North America. Don't do it..

I won't do the 2.39 download, I have the same fear of voiding the warranty.
I've been running on G band only for about a week now with no disconnects.
The MCX is working pretty well on wireless G, maybe even a little better than
on wireless A, so I may just live with this.
This is kind of like buying a car with cruise control, but the cruise
control doesn't work, so the dealer tells you you'll just have to use the gas
pedal. I just feel like I should have the option, otherwise I could've
purchased a cheaper G only router to begin with.
My fear is if I get a return authorization, I'll end up with a refurbished
router worse than what I have now.
Thanks for all your help.

right now there are NO firmware downloads on the US site at all for
the DI-784! I've written to DLink to ask them what's up...

Hi Barb
Guess what? I just checked D-Link support page for DI-784 and there is a
version 2.40 out there now. It's dated 3/22/06. They must have been updating
when you checked.
I'll try it out.
Thanks
