- DVI to HDMI screen flicker
- Posted by Matt Capewell on January 12th, 2006
I have recently purchased a HD LCD TV which I have hooked up to my MCE 2005
machine. The graphics card is an ATI X1300 and I have linked this to the
screen using a DVI to HDMI cable.
Before installing the ATI drivers everything is fine however once these are
installed I get random screen flicker when running at 720p resolution. The
flickering consists of red horizontal lines and happens both in MCE and also
at the Windows desktop. I've tried numerous versions of the ATI Catalyst
drivers (5.09, 5.12 and 5.13) but they are all the same. I've also tried at
both 50Hz and 60Hz.
Does anyone have any ideas??
Thanks,
Matt

What is the resolution you are using?
- Posted by Matt Capewell on January 12th, 2006
The resolution is set to 1280x720

In the US 720p is 1280x702@60Hz
In Europe it is/will be 1280x720@50Hz
If in Europe check your TVs documentation to see what it is expecting.
Since the 5.6 Catalalys drivers have had what is known as the DVI bug. This
bug nomally only effects proper syncronization of dropped signals but users
seing this problem use the 5.6 drivers. Do you have either a VGA or
Component interface available that you can try?
Does your TV have any problems when your antenna or cable connection is
connected directly to it?

Thanks for the replies!
I'm in Europe (UK). I've checked the TV's manual and it supports both 50
and 60Hz at 720p through the HDMI connection.
It has got both Component and VGA connections so I will try both of these
out later. No the TV doesn't have any problems with either SD TV signal or a
seperate DVD player so I'm pretty sure the TV on the whole is working fine.
Would it be worth trying to find Catalyst 5.6 from somewhere and giving that
a go?

First try component and VGA before you look for the older driver. It is
available I beleive from the ATI FTP site but I do not have the link.
You may find that you get excellent quality with either one of them and with
VGA you probably will not get any Overscan which will help when you run PC
applications on your system.

No, it is not worth trying go back to Catalyst 5.6
I have X1300, it works great with Catalyst 5.13, it is connected via
DVI to a HD LCDTV.

You don't understand the DVI bug is only a problem with DVI outputs when
connected to a HDMI input on the TV with either a DVI-HDMI cable or with a
DVI-HDMI adapter. It is not a problem when conecting a DVI output to a DVI
input which is what you are using.

oh, really? I didn't know that.
Where did you hear about this bug? Is there any documentation?
- Posted by JW on January 14th, 2006
There are several threads about in on the AVSforum site's HTPC subforum
(avsforum.com). AFAIK there is not any information about it on the ATI
site. When the Catalyst 6.1 drivers get released the first question on the
Avsforum will be has it resolved the DVI bug.

So there is no official aknowledgement from ATI that there is such a
bug? Just people guessing?
- Posted by JW on January 15th, 2006
It does not appear to be people guessing since everyone who reported the
problem then had the problem disappear after going back to the 5.6 drivers
but of course as you surmise that could be totally incorrect. however since
I think I saw at least a dozen reports of no prblems with 5.6 I believe the
bug exists.

If you go onto the ATI support site and do a search for 'HDMI' then the
single result explains this known issue.
I tried the component and VGA connections - both worked but I suffered from
random crashing! I have reverted back to an S-Video to Scart cable until I
(or ATI) have figued out how to fix the DVI-HDMI issue.
Thanks for your help!
