- Error Code 3 - Cant Download Guide Info
- Posted by Mr Smiley on October 19th, 2005
I had my media center 2005 pc powered off for about ten days. When I
returned I could not download guide information from the internet. I am able
to browse the web with IE just fine over my cable modem. I checked my
McAffee Firewall settings and even disabled it to no avail. I even tried to
run the guide setup in MCE again and that would not connect either. The
channel info is listed in the guide but no program data appears for each
listing. Any suggestions?

First, check the date and time on the PC, they could be wrong, and this will cause Guide download errors.

Thanks for the reply. The windows clock/time zone, daylight savings time and
the BIOS clock are all correct. Also BITS and WUAUSERV are both in the
registry list under NETSCVS. I also backed up and removed the contents of
the EPG folder. Still no luck. If anyone has experienced an issue like this
I would really appreciate some help.

I would also like to add that I went into setup to test the internet
connection through Media Center and it would not connect at all. Firewall
issues have been ruled out and I was able to download the new XP security
updates through IE.

Mr Smiley,
I am having the same problem you are, unfortunately I have not been able to
find an answer. I also did try all the solutions and all my files were there
also. You mentioned you tried to go online, thru the media center. I also
could not accomplish this.
Have you had any luck, if so, please let me know.
Have you tried to re-install Media center?

bspeed,
Reinstalling media center as i understand it means reinstalling windows.
This is what Dell's support techs would advise. Looking at this message
board and the forums on TGB there seems to be no shortage of folks with this
same issue, however answers are more difficult to come by.
My work around is to use the TV guide on yahoo and set recording manually
without the guide. I would hope that Microsoft and a community of Media
Center users would have a better solution than this or a wholesale OS
reinstall.

Dan,
After about 4 hours I was able to get my download to work. I went thru alot
of procedures to get it to work, and quite hinestly I cannot tell you which
one was the solution. I will list them, and if you need more details please
let me know.
I had thought I had shut down all spamware and anti-virsus, but I found one
in my program menu, I nver though was installed. I uninstalled that program.
I then went to windows update, and tried to update ALL my hardware and
software. I found out that due to a Norton's update file, I was not getting
any updates. After 3 hours, I updated all critical updates, and the two
updates to MCE.
Rebooted and it now works properly.
Check your updates, and make sure you have installed the new MCE

Doug,
Could be, I had to run 8 dll.'s to get my windows update service to work
again. Until I reloaded these files I could not download updates, so there
could be a relationship.

bspeed, thanks for the tips. my McAfee privacy service was the source of the
problem. After reading your post, I uninstalled the privacy service and
restarted my computer, lauched program guide update and it worked. Microsoft
should definately look into this. I am gonna contact McAfee and let them know
of this problem cause there may be something wrong with their privacy
service. I noticed, however, that other people are using Norton Privacy
service and they are experiencing the same problem which leads me to think
that there maybe an issue with Media center itself. Thanks again guys!
