- Extending Media Center and Set Top Cable Box w/ Digital TV
- Posted by Sean on September 28th, 2005
One of the reasons I purchased XP MCE was so I could store all my CD's on my
PC and record TV. My computer is upstairs and I can wire or wireless a
connection to a Lynksis Media Extender. But what happens with my Digital
Cable Set Top Box? How do I control it from upstairs? Do I need to extend the
IR as well? Will my Tuner Card allow me to change channels from the MCE
interface? Any enlightenment will help.
Thank you,

You would locate your STB near your PC, so you can
feed the STB's A/V outputs to your PC, and your PC
can control the STB via IR (change the channel).
You would locate your extender near your TV. When
you use the extender remote, the signals will be
sent over your LAN to the PC, which will in turn
control the STB.

Thank you Bob. I was hoping that was the case. The other question I was
trying to ask was how does media center change the channel unattended (or can
it) to record a tv program if it set it to record channel 74 when its
currently set on channel 2? (I only have a single tuner card) Or in the case
I have many programs to record on different channels. Does the pc send the IR
signal to the STB on its own?

An IR emitter connected to the PC will send the
signals to your STB to change the channel. It
does this when you're watching Live TV, and when
it is recording shows unattended. You just need
to leave your STB always powered on, because MCE's
ability to control the STB is limited to changing
the channel only.
