"Failed to record - Tuner Error"?
Posted by Carlo Razzeto on January 26th, 2008

In this test system, I set up ghost hunter and numbers to record off of CBS
HD. When I went to go check my recordings I noticed there weren't any on my
extender. So I walked back to the media center PC, for starters as usual the
HD was being absolutly slammed even though the computer wasn't doing
anything at all. Secondly I noticed a media center notification in the task
bar that told me it failed to record shows... Ok, so I click, read through
help and it tells me how to go about finding out what the issue was.

I go to recorded shows, up to history, then I click on the shows that were
supposed to have recorded, and it says "Tuner Failure, no other tuners
available." Huh, that's odd... So I click out of recorded TV, and over to
live to see what I get on the channel it's supposed to record on (1051
raleigh). Low and behold, tuner starts right up, and there's Craig
Ferguison. Fustration, super fustration. So I would love to figure out
what's up, so hopefully I can get my OTA HD shows recorded onto media center
where I can archive to DVD (HD source looks fab. recorded to DVD then
upscaled back actually!).

The tuner I have is an ArtecMedia T14A
(http://www.artec.com.tw/ehtm/products/t14a.htm), this is a USB 2.0 tuner
card. So I'm wondering, is there any sort of known issue with using a USB
tuner to try and power a full fledged media center? Is there anything I can
investigate that might help out?

Thanks very much for any idea's,

Carlo Razzeto

I have the exact same problem with the same tuner. I am running Vista home
premium x64. I just recently purchased a second T14A so I could record and
watch live TV at the same time, but this is causing an even greater problem.
When I watch one channel and try to record another i get a black screen and
have to restart the media center services or unplug and plug in the tuner
again. The funny thing is, I have used this tuner and media center since the
release of vista with no problems. Must have been a patch released from MS
that messed this one up. Any help MS?

yeah, actually sounds like we're using the same tuner here and everything.
Really fustrating I'll say that much, I'm also having an issue with a 3rd
party antenna not playing nice with this tuner. I bought a radio shack
antenna that gets no signal at all (per tuner), then a cheaper RCA attena
from Walmart which does get good signal but when you try to watch TV you get
about 1 frame per 3 seconds and no audio.

Can these PC tuners just generally not handle normal antenna's or is it this
"cheap" USB tuner that is just having issues. Perhaps if it's just this
tuner I might (in the future) consider upgrading to a newer PCI Express
tuner.

Well, I have used the tuner for sometime and actually aquired it thru the
vista purchase program as a rebate. When I first set it up with vista i had
no problems with its use. I stopped using the media center for awhile as I
used satellite and was no longer in need of it. During that time frame it
stopped working. So, my assumtion is that MS released an update that messed
this up (as the driver is the same) but im not about to uninstall all the
updates to get this figured out. Its just not worth it to me as I went to a
DVR service with my local cable provider.

As far as the signal, I used an outside mounted antenna and received what
could possibly be the best broadcast HD picture I have seen to date. I dont
recommend internal antennas (even amplified) as I have had horrible luck with
them and experienced the same problems you have listed. If you plan on
sticking with this setup I would recommend you get another tuner (i have 2
T14A tuners and both get the same error), and then install an outside
antenna. See the link below for an awesome resource on OA HDTV.

Best of luck to you,

Have you checked the Artec Website to be sure that you have the latest Vista
64 drivers for your tuners?
Are the 2 tuners connected to the same USB controller?

Yes, I have installed the latest drivers and the older drivers provided on
the cd that comes with it and both generate the same results. I believe I
understand where you are going with the USB controller, but they are not on
the same controller.

thanks,
Ryan
