File Transfer errors when tranferring data from my old Win XP Home
Posted by E.D. on March 22nd, 2006

My first post here, Does anyone have any idea of what my problem might be
caused by, or what to do about it?
I bought this Sony VGN AX-580G through the mail, I got it on 03-06-2006,
I've been trying to work with it for a week. My problem is that I need to
transfer my database from my desktop computer to this new computer, and I am
having problems. The data base is 28 Gigs of my directories and data, mostly
documents and pictures. The desk top is a 2.4 Gig P4 with Win XP Home. It
works fine. I use Norton Ghost.exe Boot disk to back up my HD to a USB
External Hard Drive. It works good, and I can back up and restore with no
problem. My desktop can read all the files in my external hard drive with no
problem. But when I try to transfer the data base from the external hard
drive to the new computer, it will start to transfer files ok, but after a
while it stops, It will give a messege that it “can not copy”. When I press
ok, the program quits and I have to start over, then it stops again. I have
to transfer 28 Gigs, and never made it past 4 Gigs yet. I tried transferring
in Windows File Manager, and then with a special USB File Transfer Cable and
Software, with no success. I've been checking real close to see what is going
on. I found that the desktop can read and open all the files on the external
hard drive ok, So I know they transferred to there ok. I made a list of some
of the files that would not do the original copy. When I connect the new
computer to the external hard drive, I can see all the files on the External
HD, and can open most of them. But when I try to open the files that would
not transfer, they will not open. It will say “no preview available”. It
seems to be some incompatibilty issue with the Windows XP Media Center
Edition, because all the hardware seems to be working fine. Could there be an
issue between the Win XP Home and the Win XP MCE? If so, I need to get the
bugs out, or find a work around solution. What do you think?
Thanks in advance,
E.D.

It sounds to me like maybe your USB hard drive is formatted as Fat32, and
one of the files you're trying to copy is larger than 4Gb (the limit on
Fat32). Check it in Disk Manager and see if it's Fat32...if so, reformat it
as NTFS and try again. Either that or maybe the MCE box is formatted as
Fat32...

You need to find out if the problem is transferring the files onto the USB
hard drive from the XP Home box, or if the problem is copying them from the
USB drive to the MCE box...your posting didn't seem to say with any
certainty where the issue was...

Otherwise, the cheapest/best solution is to get a firewall/router for $20 or
less (check the Sunday newspaper ads) and network the two PCs together...
