Firewall blocking guide download
Posted by DJK on December 24th, 2005

Hello,

Can anyone advise of the outbound ports that need to be opened for the guide
to download?

Thank you

What firewall are you running? The Windows Firewall in XP won't block the
guide downloads. If you're running something Norton, ZoneAlarm or McAfee,
try temporarily uninstalling it to see if that's really the issue.

Do you know which ports MCE uses to download the data?

80 and 443.

Make sure you've allowed the Local System account on your system to have
access via ISA2004.

Problem solved! Does it ever use 443? If not I will remove it from the rule.

I assume it does, because in the first two years after MCE was released,
when the SSL cert for the epg data server expired, EPG downloads were broken
for everyone until the update was released. That indirect proof was enough
for me to ascertain that port 443 was used at some point.

Note that EPG downloads are pull operations (i.e. they don't require
listening ports). Unless your firewall does outgoing filtering, there isn't
really anything you need to configure. Just make sure the 'user' is
authorized to access internet through ISA and you should be good.

Hoping to revive a very old thread.

For someone like myself with limited experience with ISA, opening up ports
for the Local System account is not as straightforward as doing the same
thing which domain accounts. How do I go about doing that?

Here's what I'm doing:
1. Create new access rule.
2. On the User Sets page of the wizard, I remove the default All Users and
click Add to specify a new user.
3. On the Add Users dialog, I click "New User".
4. On the Users page of the "New User Set Wizard", I click "Add" and choose
"Windows Users and Groups".
5. On the "Select Users or Groups", what do I enter? I've tried searching on
the Advanced tab for the Local System account, but this dialog isn't let me
include built-in accounts for specific computers.

As an alternative, is there a way for me to change the user account which is
used for the download?

Thanks in advance for any help.
