Hi all,
I used to have my media center PC connected to my TV (DLP HDTV - Toshiba
46HM95) through a regular composite video cable (single RCA connector). Both
recorded and live TV looked fine for standard-definition TV (only the issual
effects of passing through the MCE TV encoder and stuff like that), but when
used as a PC it was pretty bad (understandably).
In order to get a better picture quality I changed things and now I'm
connecting the PC to the TV via a DVI/HDMI cable.
Now the PC used as a PC has incredible quality and better resolution (I can
use the TV as a huge monitor), but the TV quality is terribly bad. Image is
very like "fuzzy" or blur (e.g. I can see any sharp edges), similar to what
happens when you use an LCD monitor in a resolution lower that it's native
one.
My guess is as follows: before, the "up conversion" from a SD signal to
something that the DLP TV can display was done by the TV itself; now, since
the PC is connected via a higher-resolution (720p), the up-conversion is now
happening somewhere inside MCE and no longer in the TV, and this conversion
is of much worse quality.
Can that be the case? How can I fix this? Is there any way of getting good
quality for both watching TV and using MCE as a regular PC?
Thanks.
I agree with your evaluation the upscaling is done by your graphics card and
the upscaling quality varies by graphics card and drivers. I suggest that
you read the PureVideo white paper on the NVIDIA Web site and consider
upgrading to a newer graphics card and the NVIDIA PureVideo Decoder
software. The power of the graphics card you need is based on wheather or
not you plan on installing an HDTV tuner card in your PC in the future.
