HDTV DVR_MS AC3 vs NON DVR_MS AC3
Posted by Jeff on November 24th, 2005

My problem is this.

I have no problem downconverting a HDTV broadcast with AC3 to DVD with Nero
Vision 4

But if I use a NON DVR-MS file that is HDTV Mpeg2 with AC3 and try
downconverting it with Nero Vision I get a DVD with perfect video but
absolutely NO sound.

Any clues ?,

I will also add, the successful Donconverting was done with DVR-MS files
with AC3 eminating from a ATI HDTV wonder

The NON DVR-MS files (IN Mpeg 2 form with AC3) came from a Dvico Fusion3 QAM

Lastly I will add this.

Win dvd 7 plays the DVR-MS file perfectly whereas non DVR_MS hi def files
will play without sound, though regular Mpeg 1 files will play

It sounds like the non-DVR-MS file doesn't even contain
an audio stream. How do you know that it includes an
AC3 audio stream?

Precisely what format does the Fusion3 software use? MPEG-2 transport
stream or MPEG-2 program stream format?

Your issue probably is with the Fusion3 software creating slightly
non-standard compliant output files. Thus, you should check if Dvico has
made a newer software version available. If not, you might want to discuss
this issue with Dvico support or in a support forum dedicated to their TV
cards.

It uses wither the TP format or native mpeg2

It plays normally in Media player, etc, just when downconverting all audio
is lost

Media Player cannot play MPEG-2 Transport Stream files by itself. Only if
third party DirectShow filters are installed which handle the TS format, it
can play them.

So "it plays normally in Media player" is not sufficient information. You
really need to investigate what Dvico's software is creating there... Since
this is completely outside the realm of Windows XP Media Center Edition,
you might want to ask in a forum where Dvico users hang out.
