Help - Problems Installing
Posted by Pirata on November 30th, 2005

I recently built a PC with the following configuration

Motherboard: Abit KN8 nForce4 4DDR-DIMM
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 Venice 3500 2.2GHz
Ram: Kingston 1Gb
Hard Disk: Maxtor 300GB
Graphic Card: Hightech Excalibur ATI Radeon X550

As Operative System I purchased Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005

Please bear with me;

The supplier delivered 4 CD's, Media Center CD 1 and CD 2, plus a CD which
is labelled "Updates f/ Version 2005" and finally a CD labelled
"Lokaliseringspaket för Windows XP Media Center Edition (svenska), the
translation would be "localization packet for..."

Now, during the first installation, the system asked me to insert the SP2
CD, which I did not have, however I clicked cancel and he carried on
installing. I thought I will set for Automatic Updates afterwords, which I
did.

Everything went ok, and the system even did the above mentioned updates
afterwords. However, when I tried to installed the CD with the updates, it
asked me for Net Framework 1.1 SP1. Again did not had that, went to the site
and downloaded it, and after that the system crashed for the 1st time. Not
only freezed, but actually switched itself off.

Before the crash, whilst I was joining my home network, I noticed that on
the Control Panel / System, it showed Media Center Edition Version 2002
Service Pack 2, which I thought to be strange taking into account that the
CD's are labelled 2005. Is this normal???

Furthermore, I tried to repair the installation, but did not succeeded
fully. Formated the disk again and reinstalled it again. The same procedure
as describe above, but now the system says it needs a file on folder I386. I
explored the CD2 and realized that there is a folder called I386 in there,
however, that doesn't seem to solve the problem.

After downloading the Updates as well as NET Framework 1.1 SP1, the system
does not work any longer and I can only go in in Safe mode. It gives me the
following message.

"C:\Windows\system32\KBDus.dll is not a valid Windows Image"

Well, that about it, please feel free to ask if you require any further info.

Please send me some tips

Thanks in advance

I had the same problem.

When the install asks for the SP2 CD, it's really asking you for Media
Centre CD1.

I wonder if it would be quicker to wipe the disk and re-install?

Thanks for your quick help Richard.

The problem is that I have done that twice but doesn't seem to solve the
problem because when I install the updates it crashes again..

Going mad. I will be able to return the Operative System to the supplier,
but it feels rather frustating. On other machine I have I run Pinnacle
ShowCenter and never had a problem. I was looking forward to get the nex X360
but now I dont know anymore.

By your description, it doesn't sound like you have done that twice, it
sounds more like you are manually trying to find the files when asked.

The install procedure is:

-Start with Disk 1 Windows XP w/SP2
-When prompted for the Media Center disk, use Disk 2
-When prompted for the SP2, go back to Disk 1.

Do this as a clean install, don't try to repair or reinstall, you might even
want to delete the partition to make sure the old copy is gone. Don't worry
about the updates until you see if the basic install is working.
