HELP to Turn Off AUTOPLAY on External Hard Drive
Posted by Seahawk on December 17th, 2005

I have just set up a new computer using WINDOWS XP MEDIA CENTER with all the
latest updates installed.

I have an external hard drive connected to the computer with by USB 2.
Each time I turn the external drive on, AUTOPLAY scans the entire 200 gig
drive, and then pops up a small window asking WHAT DO YOU WANT WINDOWS TO DO?
Underneath is a list of programs from which to choose to view the contents.

This is the same thing Windows does when I put a smart media card from my
digital camera into the external media reader.

How can I turn AUTOPLAY off just for the external drive?

Thanks.

Open Explorer and righ click on the drive. Select properties and click on
the Autoplay tab. You can then select "No Action".

Hope this helps,

BW

Thanks, but the NO ACTION or any of the other selections is what you want
WINDOWS to after it scans the drive.

Tried it, but it still scans the drive.

Any other thoughts?

If you install the free TweakUI Powertoy from Microsoft there is an option to
disable autoplay on individual drives. Here's the link:
