How do i play mp4 on media centre
Posted by nick c on November 21st, 2005

Hi,

I have quite a large collection of movies in mp4 which i watch using
quicktime or VLC. Is there any way to watch them using Media Centre. It would
make life a lot simpler for me.

Thanks

It is possible. It may not always be trivial though?

I installed Nero's player/codec (Showtime 2?) They seem to brand their mpg4
as "Nero Digital".

You may need to change filter merit's (I did) because it breaks (= takes
over) some? mpg2 playback. I noticed that suddenly I had problems playing
"fat" mpg2 files (HiDef bit rates). I solved it (I was lucky?) by raising
the merit 1 step for my PowerDVD6 dvd/mpg2 codec and lowered it one step
for the Nero codec.

I tried some other mpg4 codec's first but that didn't work for me. Note, I'm
NO expert at this I just tinkered a bit. In any case *mp4 files and all
else playes fine after that.
(Cool detail: "thumbnails" are created for mp4 files)

I'm taking this from memory btw.

Try adding this to the regsitry
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mp4]

"Content Type"="video/mp4"
"PerceivedType"="video"
