How to join XP Media Center 2002 to domain
Posted by gmctech on October 8th, 2005

I have Windows XP Media Edition 2002, and I cannot join a domiain (it is
greyed out), and the Network Instalation Wizard makes no provisions for doing
so.

I clearly see and undestand that this is a problem in MCE 2005, but I have
2002. From many posts I see that this should be possible pre 2005, but no
one describes how to do so explicitly.

Could someone please explain how to join a domain with Win XP MCE 2002?

Thanks in advance.

are you sure you have 2002?? MCE 2005 reports as 2002 in System Properties
it only says 2005 in Media Center.
I'm only aware of 2004 and 2005 MCE and I believe neither can be joined to
the domain post installation.

Check the version of Media Center that you have.

It sounds like you have Media Center 2005
You can do this at this site

MCE 2004 can be joined to a domain, during or after installation. If an MCE 2004 machine is upgraded to 2005, it can remain joined to a domain, if it already is a member.

Windows MCE2005 can be joined to a domain during the original OEM
installation it asks whether it is a workgroup or domain member - providing
it is on the domain during installation and you have correct network
credentials you can set it up on a domain with no problems.

You can join MCE 2k5 to a domain post install. I've done it with two of my
media center pcs, one at work and one at home. Follow this link:

However, while this does work, if the user plans to purchase any of the Media Center Extender products, this may break the ability to use an Extender device, concurrently, with a locally logged on user or another Extender device..

Can someone identify what extended devices and what we need them for. May be
we don't need them in business environment. I know we don't need fast user
switching in Business environment

Thanks.
