IR hardware question
Posted by TamporA on April 3rd, 2008

As it is so common for people to ask if there is a way around the IR hardware
not found message, I will not bother asking. I am trying to set up a STB to
use S-video, it is a hauppauge pvr-250, as of right now it is working well
with coax. I also have a media center extender with remote. I was trying to
go through the signal setup wizard from the extender but am unable to get the
proper menus to set it up, I was hoping i could use that remote to skip past
that part of the setup. Is it possible to configure your signals from an
extender? I would likely only be using media center through the extender
(xbox 360) in the future so was hoping to avoid buying another remote if
possible. The remote I have for the 360 is supposedly a universal media
center compatible remote but I have no IR receiver or Blaster. I have a
friend I could borrow one from to get through the initial setup; if I could
still use S-video w/o the remote after setting it up initially I might bother
him for it. Any ideas or comments are much appreciated.

TV Signal setup is not available via the Extender GUI. And you would still
have to have the IR hardware to use an STB. Otherwise, there's no way to
control the channel the STB is tuned to.

Ok thanks, didn't realize my normal STB remote would not work for controlling
the menus and channels. I've used S-video via the hauppauge software in the
past and I am able to use both the hauppauge remote and my normal STB remote.
Thanks for the speedy response, guess I'll either invest in another remote
or wait in hope of a microsoft patch.

A patch is probably not forthcoming as this is not a bug, it is the design.

Even if MS did alter this behavior to allow setup without the IR hardware,
you still need the IR hardware connected to the MCE system so it can change
channels on the STB (as Doug pointed out) and you need a remote at the
Extender to control that.

I've already mentioned that my extender has a fully compatible programmable
media center remote. I realize this is not a bug but in mine and many
other's opinions this was a poor choice in development. So it is confirmed
that the STB remote will not work to control channels? This seems unusual to
say the least.

Thanks for the input

I guess I am confused then on what you are asking. I thought that you wanted
to control the MC PC from the Extender, if that is the case then you only
need a functional remote at the extender. The MC PC would only need the IR
receiver/emitter not just for setup, but that is how it will control the STB
remotely.

Unless your current STB remote is some type of universal remote that has MC
codes built in (like the Logitech Harmony remotes), then it doesn't enter
the equation as far as Media Center is concerned.

Most of the others that have posted here about this want to set there system
up with no remote and want to just manually change the channels on the STB;
which of course means they could never do unattended recordings.

Ok thanks Jaime, I think what I'm trying to ask is; can I borrow a media
center remote with receiver/emitter to set up the svideo input. Once I have
it set up, can I then use my extender remote in conjunction with my STB
remote, STB remote just to manually change channels using the inherent menu
guide system rather. I would be happy with no unattended recordings as that
is what I've been dealing with all along with the hauppauge software. I have
a DVR on my main TV for unattended recordings if needed. Sorry this is a
little confusing, honestly I'm just wishing my hauppauge software would work
on Vista.

Two considerations.
I. You could get an IR repeater at radio shack so that you can use your STB
remote from the location of your Extender and then just connect the STB to
your tuner's coax input and always watch channel (3 or 4) using MC.
2. I have no trouble using the Hauppauge WinTV6 application on Vista just
get the latest Vista version from the Hauppauge Website. I usually WinTV6
instead of MC so as to get better PQ when I do not want to take advantage of
time shifting

Okay, so when are at the extender, watching TV, and want to change channels,
you would have to go to the room with the MC computer and STB and change the
channel? For the price of a MC remote kit (<$30) that seems like a lot of
work and hassle.

I don't know if anyone has tried using the IR equipment just to setup MC and
then removed it. I am not sure if you would get an error the next time is
started without the receiver plugged in or if once it was the setup the
system would be happy or maybe you would get some error but MC would load
anyway.

You get an error complaining that Media Center couldn't change channels & as MC 'knows' what channel
it has changed to this would mean that you would only be able to record a show by actually hitting
the record button as MC would 'think' that it was on the wrong channel & thus would start a
scheduled recording.

Thanks Nigel, I always wondered if you could do the setup with the IR stuff
in place, then remove it.

Would they still have a problem, if they don't care about scheduled
recordings (as the OP stated)?

Yes, they'd still have a problem. They would have to use the set top box
remote to change channels for Live TV, or if they just wanted to record
something on the fly.

It sounds like that is all the OP wants to do -- they wanted to know if they
could just set up MC with the borrowed hardware (removing after setup), then
just use the STB remote to change channels and they said they didn't care
about unattended recording.
