- IR Remote Problems w/ Directv
- Posted by Cajun Gwailo on March 5th, 2006
I am not able to get my ir remote to work correctly. It "changes" the
channels on my monitor screen, but they don't actually change on the
tuner.
I've tried all the reprogramming fixes, to no avail, and a reinstall of
remote drivers.
My system is only a week old, and I've done the updates.
So at present, I'm using two remotes - the IR one for most MCE
functions, and the Directv one to change channels.
System configuration is I have satellite box connected to PC. My
directv box is the D10.
Anyone had a similar problem / fix?
Thanks.

Make sure that you have the IR blaster positioned in the correct spot on the
D10. Use a flashlight to be sure of where the IR receiver on the Set Top Box
is and place the blaster directly over it. On the D10 the IR receiver is
located halfway between the Power LED and the Guide button.

Top Box
is and place the blaster directly over it
during the set-up process? the IR remote must be pointing at BOTH at
the same time?

If you have enter the correct info about your provider and type of box, I
think it still sets up okay. You should be able to play around with moving
the blaster after the fact until you get it positioned correctly to change
channels.

As I interpret the OP's response, I don't think he knows about IR
blasters.

I suspected that as well, but I'm a hopeless optimist.

Let's start over.
I have an HP m7250n, which I have just received.
I have successfully set up all functions so far.
I receive my television signal from Directv via the D10 receiver, which
is connected to the TV input on the PC.
Live television plays fine.
The Media Center remote successfully controls most functions on the PC
as it should. Volume, start, stop, pause, other functions of Media
Center.
When I try to change channels, either by entering a number, or by
pressing up and down on the Media Center remote, the "window" on my
monitor shows that I am "changing channels". The channel number shows
correctly, and the appropriate program information comes up from the
guide.
But the channel does not actually change.
I went thru the set up process for the remote several times, trying all
the different configurations - i.e., "automatically detect remote",
manually configure remote, trying the other options like "three channel
numbers", "four channel numbers" "need to press OK or enter" "do not
need to press OK or enter.".
I tried the "teach the IR blaster my remote" function several different
ways - holding and releasing keys - doing this with the remote next to
the blaster (almost touching) as stated in the instructions, also
trying it from "3-7 feet away, looking for the 'sweet spot' as
described in a MS forum.
So far, no luck.
I have changed batteries, deleted the keyboard.pni file and reinstalled
the remote drivers as suggested in another forum.
The only thing it seems I cannot do is make the Media Center remote
change channels.
It may provide a further clue that when I have tried to record a
television program, and set that up from the guide, Media Center does
not change channels to record that program - it records whatever is on
the last channel I was watching - even if the tv function is "off" when
the unit starts recording.
With all that in mind, are there any other suggestions? Or can you
point out what I am obviously missing in the process?
Thank you.

Please confirm that you have the IR bug stuck on the front of the Set Top Box in
the correct position over the IR receiver & that you have the 1/4" jack plug on
the other end of the wire from the IR bug plugged into the MCE IR remote
receiver.

Fiddled enough to make it finally work, but not sure why it changed.
Ultimately I suspect it was with the IR bug, (short in wire?) but have
no way of knowing. Thanks to everyone for your suggestions.

Then it looks like I misinterpreted your post! I was just preparing to
post a tutorial on how to use the IR bugs :-)
My apologies, and thanks for forestalling the tutorial.

How did "fiddle" with the IR bug to make it work? I have the exact same
problem you had. Cannot get the media center to learn any commands. The IR
bug won't light up when I press the "0" button to learn the command. The IR
bug did light up when I tried to enter in the 28 remote codes (none of which
worked).
Thanks

im having the exact same issues as you right now.
i tried messing around with the IR bug in the back but to no avail.
this is very aggravating, is there anything I can do?
- Posted by Cajun Gwailo on March 29th, 2006
What did it for me was scotch tape. Taking the bug, and taping it to
the front of the Direct box, having had to try numerous locations on
the box to find the sweet spot where it worked.
Unless I was missing something when I unpacked, I didn't find this
process very well documented in the furnished materials.

First and foremost, be certain the remote is in IR mode and not RF mode. The
D10 has the option to change in order to control the STB from another room.
This may not be your issue but you'd be chasing you tail if the remote is in
RF mode. Read your manual for the STB for info on changing between RF and IR
modes.
