Jerky DVD playback
Posted by Miffed with MS on January 10th, 2006

Suddenly my DVD playback is so slow and jerky as to be unwatchable. Playing
CD's is a similar grating experience. All the DVD's have previously been
played without a problem. I have installed nothing but the automatical MS
updates.

I have all the latest updates and have followed all the advice in the media
player troubleshooter to no avail. Disk is 89% empty and defragged.

Nero plays the DVD's perfectly.

I suspect a recent MS to be the problem here, please help!

What video card are you using?

Hopefully a Nvidia FX5200 or higher, or a ATI Radeon 9500 or higher.
Otherwise, you really should get a more powerful video card (MCE expects a
card to do DX9 in hardware, so that VMR9 can be done completely via the
video card's GPU)

I can't tell you what card it is at the moment as I'm at work however I can
tell you that it is the same card that was working fine approx 4 weeks ago
and the same card that Nero is still using to play DVD's without a problem.

I suspect the automatic updates. Graphic and tuner card driver automatic
updates are often way out of date. Suggest you go the Websites of your
graphics cards chip manufacturer (probably NVIDIA or ATI) and get the latest
MCE driver update. Also obtain an update to your DVD Decoder or try the
30day free trial of the NVIDIA Decoder from the NVIDIA Website.

Thanks for your advice which I have taken. Updated the drivers to no avail. I
didn't update the DVD decoder as you suggested as I can't think that is the
problem as NERO plays the DVD without problem.

I believe that it's Media Player that has the fault as NERO plays ok and
that the bug was introduced with the last automatic update.

Nero likely uses its own decoder (i.e. "Nero Video").

Update your video card drivers and reinstall your DVD codes and you should
be back in business.

I have updated my video card drivers and the bug is still not fixed. I'm not
sure what you mean by DVD codes, could you please explain further.

Also could you tell me if there are any plans to release a bug fix for this?

There is no known bug that causes your problem.
Jason like me makes spelling errors, he ment DVD Codecs which is your DVD
Decoder.
We both feel that this is the cause of your problem with MCE.
And I suggest uninstalling all Decoders incluging the NERO Player/decoder
and installing the NVIDIA Decoder. If all is fine than you can try
reinstalling the NERO.

Thanks for the explanation JW, although I know a little about software
hardware remains a mystery.

I've deinstalled all decoders I could find and installed the NVIDIA Decoder
in their place to no avail. I then did a full system restore and the problem
is still there.

Completely out of ideas and still unable to watch my christmas DVD's. There
must be a way to get my system back to its pre update working days!

All suggestions warmly received.

Did you install RollUp 2? if so did you also install the following update?

I have automatic updates so rollup2 did install. I've just installed the
update you suggested below and I'm now getting an error when windows starts:

ehShell.exe - Common Language Runtime Debugging Services:
Application has generated an exception that could not be handled.
Process id = 0x6d0(1744), Thread id-ox6dc(1756)

That produced the following crash report:
EventType : MCX P1 : sh.5.1.2715.2812 P2 : appmain-no-page-yet
P3 : TypeLoad P4 : PageBasedUCPNotifyWindow_WndProc P5 : 0
P6 : WndProc P7 : InitWndProc

Oh yes ... and the DVD playback is still jerky.

I do not why the adeed update caused the probelm you are now seing.
So I suggst that you go to add/remove programs and uninstall the update I
suggsted and also uninstall RU2.
Then check the DVD Decoder de-interlace control option that I suggested.
