Jerky Video and DVD codec.
Posted by Rod M. on October 18th, 2005

The problem with the jerky video is with the DVD codec or decoder.
When I reinstalled MCE2005 I found that the decoder in PowerDVD 5.0 would
not work. I used a DVD decoder that I had purchased as a plug in to Windows
media player which worked great. Video was clear and smooth as glass. No
problems at all.
Then I installed the new Nero Burning Rom 7.0 and with it came a DVD
decorder plug in. Not thinking anything about it, I went and installed the
Nero DVD decoder.
Now all my recordings and live play back are jerky as ever. Just my luck
system restore is not working for me. I uninstalled Nero but the jerky video
is still happening.
I am going to try to reinstall the DVD plug in that I got for Windows Media
Player.
Hopefully it will work.
My question is: Is there a tweak that can be used to force the system to
only us a certain DVD decoder so if this happens again I will not have to go
through this hassle?

Thanks JW.

Yes I found the above link and ran it. Ouch, even the decoder I had before
is not for MCE.
I was looking at getting another one fron nVidia but I also read that there
is a problem with it and rollup2. Anyone else find a good decorder to use?

I know of no probelm with iThe NVIDIA Video Decoder and rollup2. There were
some reports I saw but it turned out they were not caused by the Decoder
they were not caused by the Decoder they were caused by the graphics driver
or by not unistalling a certain .NET Hotfix if required prior to installing
Rollup2.

I ran into problems with roll up 2 and my NVTV dual tuner card.

I thought it was a bad card and that $1k windows media pc was faulty,
but i found some thread that related ot the nvtv card and rollup2. I
uninstalled rollup2 and everything works fine, no jerky video. This is
clearly an issue with this card at least from my experience, whether it
pertains to codec, i dunno

Well i still have no luck. Updated my PowerDVD 5.0 which the widows dvd check
program said it was good to go. Still jerky as hell. I tried nVidia DVD
decoder and still no luck. By the way when I did my clean install I also
installed rollup2 and video was perfect. It was only after installing Nero
that things went bad.
I guess I will have to do another clean install.

Did you confirm that a compatible Decoder is your preferred decoder with
the decoder utility?
Did you make the .NET checks discussed in the following link when
installing Rollup2?

Yes to all your questions.

Updated all drivers. HD is defragged. Put the cat out. Washed the car.

Still jerky as hell.

So after updating and checking all hardware, I am still getting Jerky Video
on live TV and recorded TV. Recorded TV is Jerky in MCE and when playing in
WMP 10.

Played a DVD disc and play back is smooth as glass. All other movie formats
are also smooth.
What does MCE2005 use as an encoder to record live TV? I believe it has been
trashed somehow. Is there a way to reinstall the encoder? A fix would be
great.

Try reinstalling your tv tuner card drivers.
It is the tv tuner that is responsible for encoding (during live tv
recording).

Better yet, you should check to see if there is an updated version of the tv
tuner drivers and use that.
