Laptop has stalled in Auto Update Process
Posted by Angus Rouse on April 27th, 2006

Right, my sister just got a new laptop delivered today with Media Center
Edition, and I just set it up to connect to the internet etc. all basic stuff
and finally ran windows update. Upon doing so, Windows update managed to
download all the updates and proceded to install them when I chose to shut
down. It came up with a screen in the style of the blue login/shutdown screen
saying "Installing update 1 of 31" I left it, and now I have gone back to it,
it is up to update 20 of 31, but has stalled on that. Occasionally it will
switch the message to "Do no turn of the computer, it will do so
automatically" and then goes back to the "Installing Update 20 of 31". It's
been on this for ages now, and there is no sign of hard drive activity.

I have no input into the laptop other than moving the cursor, and don't want
to force shutdown incase I screw it up, but at the same time there's nothing
else I can do.

Please, does anyone have any sugestions?

Ouch.

I believe that if you shut Windows down manually (even with the power
switch), when you later restart, it will recognize that the update is
incomplete and proceed to complete it.

However, since this is a risky procedure, *please* wait for a real
expert to chime in.

OTOH, since it's a new computer, you presumably could recover just by
starting over with the manufacturer's restore disks. Presumably.

I sympathize with your pain.
