- MCE 2005 Xbox 360 Extender PC Setup Cannot contact Xbox 360
- Posted by Donovan on February 4th, 2006
I purchased an XBox 360 about a week ago, and have been trying to connect it
to my Dell XPS MCE 2005 PC ever since. I have spent a lot of time searching
the net and talking to XBox support, but so far I have not been able to get
it fixed.
The Problem:
The 360 sees my PC and connects fine via Media Connect, however when running
XBox360 setup via media center extender manager I get as far as entering the
setup key, and get stuck on the next screen. The PC always reports back Xbox
360 cannot be contacted. I also have an Xbox Classic w/ MC extender and it
connects fine to the MC PC.
My Setup:
Dell XPS Gen 4 running WinXP MCE 2005 Rollup 2
Xbox 360
Xbox Classic w/media center extender software
Linksys Router BEFSX41 firmware 1.52.9
Toshiba Cable Modem
All connections are hardwired
What I have tried thus far:
Uninstalled McAfee AV
Uninstalled MS Anti-Spyware
Disabled Windows built-in Firewall
Ugraded Linksys router to current firmware
Purchased a router on the compliant list, DLink DI-524
Direct connected the PC to the 360 via CAT5
Uninstalled and reinstalled mediaconnect and extendermanager (numerous times)
"regsvr32 %windir%\system32\rsaenh.dll"
Numerous calls to XBox support and Dell Support
The following response posts are my log files (the DvcConn.log is only from
the last few events, and does include where I added my classic Xbox to
extender succesfully, all of the failures are for the 360.):
Any ideas or suggestions?
Thanks,
Donovan

DvcConn.log - only the last several entries are included. Also note the
second entry beginning at 8:43:50 PM on Friday, was successful. This was my
Original Xbox, not the 360. The original xbox connects fine, but not the 360.

Bump. Anyone have a suggestion? If I can't get this thing to work I need to
take it back while I am still within the stores return policy. I really want
to get this working, but don't know where to go from here.
Thanks,
Donovan

Do you have any privacy guard, intrusion detection, worm detection,
anti-spyware, etc. software left on your PC? Examples include free privacy
software provided by your DSL or cable modem provider. I ask because it
appears that traffic on port 3776 is being blocked by your computer (this is
what causes the "Timed out waiting for affiliation status" message in the
log)

Thanks Todd,
I previously removed all of the Internet Protection Utlities, except the
Windows Firewall which I have disabled. I had McAfee's Internet Security
Suite, but uninstalled it. I also had the Microsoft Anti-Spyware, but
removed it as well. Nothing seems to help. Any ideas?

Two things:
1) Would you be willing to run winmsd, select File > Export, then e-mail the
resulting file to msft_mcx at hotmail? I'd like to see if there are any
residual processes, etc. hanging around.
2) Could you grab a NetCap trace while you are trying to add your Extender
(instructions below) and e-mail that file as well?
3) Please open a command window, run "netsh" <enter>, "winsock" <enter>,
"show helper" <enter>, then paste the output here
NETCAP instructions
1) Install the Windows XP Service Pack 2 Support Tools from the following
link
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
2) Once installed, open a cmd window and change active directory to the
Support Tools directory
3) Start the network capture using "netcap.exe". The /n: parameter specifies
which network interface should be monitored. To discover the network
interfaces on your machine type "netcap /?" The interfaces will be listed at
the end to the executables help details.
.. Example: C:\Program Files\ Support Tools>netcap /n:1
4) Conduct the steps to repro the problem you are seeing. Once complete
return back to the command window and hit the space bar.
5) Send the file created

Sounds similiar to my installation experieince. When completed, and by
completed I mean I got the 8 digit code from the X360 and entered it into MCE
2005, and clicked the last steps. Even though my MCE did not see the X360,
when I went to the X360 and hit the MCE button on the remote, or in the
dashboard, it found the MCE and connected. I assume you tried connecting
fromt eh X360 to your MCE already, even though the install gave the
impression of not being complete? If not give it a try.

Thanks for the suggestion, but no such luck for me. Most of the time the 360
just gives me the setup keys again. A couple of times it has tried to
connect to the MCE, but always fails. The media center extender software on
the MCE, doesn't show the 360 as being registered.

Can you please point me to your dvcconn and dvsetup logs for your issue?
Have you tried to run setup with the PC and Xbox 360 dirrectly connected to
eachother?
(a regular Ethernet cable is fine - the Xbox will automatically switch into
cross-over mode and default to a autonet address)

The logs are posted in the second and third responses to the original topic
of this thread. They were faitly long so I had to break them into to
responses.
I did try connecting them directly, and had the same results. The 360 could
access the My Pictures and Music via windows media connect. The PC still
would not get past the setup key when trying to add it as an extender.
Thanks,
Donovan

I had the same exact experience trying to get my XBOX 360 to connect with my
new MCE 2005 PC. I suspect this is going to become a BIG problem for
Microsoft in the near term as more 360s become available and more people try
to use them as MC Extenders, as advertised. Like a lot (most?) console
gamers, I am proficient but not super-sophisticated when it comes to the
finer-points of MS Windows. I managed to open several "Ports" as instructed
by the very helpful people working the XBOX live support line, disable my
firewalls, MS anti-spyware, etc., but with no success.
It's impressive that so many consumers have tried so hard to use the 360 as
a MS Media Center extender. Removing security software, disabling fire
walls, posting all sorts of logs to message boards, replacing networking
hardware. I suspect for each person that's willing to make the effort, there
are dozens more who won't bother.
I'm hopeful that someday soon MS will take note and offer some sort of
downloadable executable file that would open ports and do all the other
things that need to happen for my 360 to work with my new MCE PC as
advertised. Thanks.

Hi, I just wanted to add a post to let everyone know that my problem is
fixed, and to thank everyone for their suggestions. Also, to provide info on
what fixed my problem to help others who might be having this problem.
Although I had the Windows firewall disabled, my PC seemed to still be
blocking UPD Port 1900 traffic. I discovered this by using PacketMon from
AnalogX.
I went into the Windows Firewall settings, to the exception list, and to the
Exception for UPnP Framework, UDP Port 1900. I changed the scope from subnet
to Any. Applied those settings. On my next attempt to add the 360, it
worked the first time. I hope this info helps someone else out there having
this same problem.
Thanks again for all the suggestions.

Thanks for the suggestion Donnovan. I tried changing the scope of the Port
1900 exception, but it didn't work. The scope of Port 1900 is probably just
one of the myriad things that could be keeping my 360/extender from working
properly.
Microsoft, please take note. One should not have to be a "power user" of
windows in order to get their 360/extender to see their MCE PC. I'm sure its
possible (and I'm sure I could figure this out), but its WAY to difficult
(and time consuming) for the average person (e.g., if you asked 100 people if
they knew how to open a Port on their Firewall, few would reply "yes"). You
guys need to publish an easy fix if you really want consumers to use MCE over
their home networks, in their living rooms and away from their PCs.

I have MCE 2005 on my HP 854n and dual tuner cards, 1 GIG RAM, cable
internet connection via ethernet from modem to pc. I'm going to purchase a
360. If I buy the 360 with the hard drive (not the core system, the other
one), can I just simply use the built-in media extender out of the box via
an ethernet cable to my pc? Or do I need to purchase other hardware? I
don't care about wireless networking and only own 1 pc. My internet
connection is not via a router but cable modem connected via ethernet.
Please advise me on this.

You ought to get a router, so both devices can share your internet

Okay, will do. Thanks for that information. What's a good inexpensive
router to buy? It doesn't have to be wireless or anything. Also, any
suggestions as to where to get one cheap?

Thanks for the feedback. In the case of the Windows Firewall, we
automatically configure the ports that need to be opened as part of the MCX
setup process. Where things get harder is with third-party firewalls as
they do not provide a standard interface we can call to open the needed
ports (which means that the user needs to open the specified ports
manually). In the end how easy it is to get things to work is under the
control of the firewall provider, but we are actively working with PC OEMs
to preconfigure the firewall on PCs they ship, engaging with firewall
providers to fingerprint our executables and add them to their allow list,
etc. in order to make this easier where we can.
