Media Center 2002 vs. Media Center 2005
Posted by Toughskinn on October 23rd, 2005

I rececntly bought a new Sony VAIO that is marketed with Windows Media Center
2005. I get it home, all is fine. I attempt to download & install Microsoft
TweakMCE on my VAIO. It downloads & installs fine...when I go to launch the
program I get an error, "The Media Center Powertioy can Only Be Run on
Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005", WHICH is what I thought I had
installed on this computer. When I go to Control Panel/System, it shows that
I have Windows XP Media Center Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 2. Obviously
that got me twisted, so I called Sony Support. They say it will & should show
version 2002, even if it is running version 2005. He fed me some soup about
the core of the operating system being the same & thus even when Microsoft
added the upgrades to make it the 2005 version, the System Properties will
still say version 2002. If this is tru, why then do I get the aforementioned
error trying to run TweakMCE? Can anyone straighten out this mystery for me?

What you're seeing is the version of Windows XP Pro which is the operating
system on the computer. The Media Center Edition portion (correctly
identified within MCE itself) is a superset running on top of the operating
system. I'm not sure why TweakMCE won't install.

What Sony Support told you is correct.

You may need to edit your registry before TweakMCE will
run. Click on the link below for the instructions.
