- Media Center dvr-ms files are supposed to play in Media Player 11.

I have installed Media Player 11 and when I try to play a Media Center dvr-ms
file I get audio but no video.

This is the normal response you might get if you don't have a dvd decoder
installed. Since you presumably do, you might try running Microsoft's
decoder checker (search microsoft.com for "decoder checker") and see if
resetting the default decoder helps any. However, rest assured that you are
an "early adopter" - the beta of MP11 just came out this week and no one
(not even the Media Center MVPs) had any earlier versions. So expect things
to be broken <g>.

The Decoder Checkup found six video decoders. The default was the nVIDIA
Pure Video that I installed just before I posted this question to see if it
would would (since I had had to install it on my MCE machine_. I checked for
updates for all the decoders (but didn't pay for any that required payment)
and then set them each to "default" in turn. Same result. Audio but no video
for all of them.
Is there a video CODEC that you would suggest?

The mystery deepens. I installed Media Player 11 on my notebook and the
dvr-ms files play fine. When I run Decoder Checkup is does not show any of
the CODECs as the default and on clicking on them, does not show any of them
as being compatible with Media Player 10 even (yet it works).

I use the nVidia decoder. Since _all_ seem to give audio but no video, then
I'd wonder about the display adapter and its ability to handle a DirectX
video feed. Remind me which video card and driver version you have...

At this point I am guessing that there is an issue with this system I am
working on. I have installed Media Player 11 on my Dell notebook, the Media
Center computer itself and my wifes desktop. I can watch the dvr-ms files on
all of those systems and Media Player 11 works fine. They all even have
different CODEXs and neither my notebook or my wifes system (when running
Decoed Cehckup) even lists one as Preferred. The Media Center computer has
nVIDIA Pure Video, but then that is the only CODEX on the system. On my main
desktop, where the problem occurs, I have installed as set the nVIDIA Pure
Video as the default, but it still does not work. (Looks like a rebuild is
in store because IE (both 6 and now 7) crash all the time.
On my Media Room computer I have the nVIDIA DualTV card and I highly
recommend it. The driver is the one shipped with the card.
I have also talked to the Media Player support people and we could not
figure out why it was not working.
Thanks.

What is the video card and driver version on the system that is failing?

ATI Radeon x300 128MB. I use a DVI split cable (from Dell) to drive two
ViewSonic LCD Monitors. (Maybe this is the ATI problem?)

Putting the same image on both monitors? Or treating them as two separate
monitors? I've never used a DVI splitter cable so have no idea what that
might do to the equation...
Other than that the video board should be fine. Might want to prowl around
in the display driver settings and see if there's anything obvious there...

If you are using just a plain DVI cable splitter it can only be used with
one DVI reciever device at a time since DVI is a handshaking protocol. You
would need a DVI distribution device to do what you are trying to do. See
the following link:

Windows sees it as two displays and Media Player 10 also sees it as two
displays. The wallpaper and screen savers see it as two devices, etc. It
was designed by Dell so that it can be used that way. I have a Gefin active
splitter in my media room, so I am familiar with these devices.
Even when I just hook up one display directly to the DVI connector on the
card, Media Player still does not work, so I am thinking that is not the
problem.

I installed Urge a few days ago (which installs WMP 11 in the process).
I am running XP MCE 2005. The media player worked fine - but I was
unable to get any video through the MCE app afterwards. I have a
Hauppage MCE-500 video card. I could get the video to display when I
used an alternative means - like Windows Movie Maker. But I
chronically got the Media Center Application failure message when
trying to use the MCE tuner. I have since uninstalled WMP 11 until I
can figure out what is happening or a new version of WMP 11 is posted.
