- Media Center Extender problems playing music
- Posted by Eboy on November 7th, 2005
Two things that drive me nuts related to playing music on the Extender are:
(1) No fast-forward or rewind of music; (2) Loud “pop” (audio artifact) in
between music tracks. #1 was almost a deal-breaker when I discovered it. At
least on an actual MCE computer you can fast-forward. Any idea why rewind is
not available on either MCE or the Extender?
#2 has me baffled. Again, no problem when listening directly on the MCE
computer but I get an annoying “pop” in between audio tracks particulary
noticable when listening to music for which there are no pauses in between
tracks.
Two questions:
Does anyone else have these problems?
Someone from Microsoft: Does the Extender on the Xbox 360 promise solutions?
(I have the Linksys Extender with all updates applied)

MCX does not support music FF/RW
Are you connected via analog or digital (S/PDIF)? If digital, does
switching to analog make a difference?

Greetings Todd. Unfortunately I do not have an amp with digital inputs to
test switching output to digital. Good suggestion, though. I will see what I
can do. I have confirmed with other MCX owners that they have the same issue
and even an Xbox Extender owner reported the same problem.
The ff/rw issue seems to stem from limitations of WMP which has FF
capability but no RW capability for music. Do you have anymore information on
this? I am a member of a loosely-knit group of classical music enthusiasts
who are transferring their large collections to Media Center. So this issue
and the issue of the "pop" is of great importance!
What do you know about the future of the MCX? Will there be improved
versions becoming available that address the no ff/rw issue? And what about
the Xbox 360 Extender? Have you or anyone else reading this thread tried
ff/rw?
Many thanks!

Current versions of MCX do not support music FF/RW. This might change in
the future, but I don't have any details to share at this point.
I don't experience a pop during music transitions on my Extenders, so other
than trying a different audio output there isn't much advice I can offer on
this...
