i have been having a lot of problems with Media centre (vista) today.

it says it is still recording a show that ended last night and i cant stop
it. I've cancelled it, deleted it, restarted, even deleted the file in its
original folder. it wont clear!

what should i do? its horrid cos i cant watch TV or record anything else on
my Livingroom PC while this is happening. i tried to contact microsoft but i
have to ring back in business working hours (which is two days away!)

Run System Restore to a time before the problem began.

Run sfc /scannow.

If no joy:
Do a thorough check for malware, following all of the steps at one of these
Web pages.
Help with malware:
All MS-MVP Sites.
Consider this: Whenever a new error condition appears on your computer, it
is almost certain that there was some change to the computer soon before the
problem began.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing programs like Messenger Plus,
whose ads for malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince
you that you owe it to the author. See also:

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is
being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure of.

i'll try that in a bit Bob. but i doubt that is the problem. i don't use
that particular PC for anything else except watching tv on the media center.
and media centre is the only program on it that accesses the net. i don't
even go on the internet browser on it. but thanks. i wil try that later on
and let you know how it goes...

Disconnect your system from the internet till you get the problem resolved.
When you start VMC can you then go to settings and redo or disable your TV
setup/record options? If yes then reboot and set them back to their correct
values and see if you still have problems.
If you can not go to settings then go to services and disable the MC
services and reboot again and see if you can change the settings.
Can you get to VMC in Safe mode and change the settings?
