Media Player vs Vista Media Center
Posted by BobbyGene on February 14th, 2008

I recently discovered one can play a DVD with the "Vista Home Premium"
without an add-on MPEG decoder. So instead of buying a third party MPEG
decoder which you can lose with an update or upgrade, I upgraded "Home Basic"
to "Home Premium". Now, my question is, since the Media Player is made
obselete by the Media Center; can I uninstall and delete the Media Player to
save start up and disk space?

Media Center is not designed to replace Media Player.
You can't remove Media Player at all.

Thank You Jason!

In this case, leaving the Media Player intact is a wise choice. Can I at
least remove it from the start up and assign it as a "Manual" start up?

Which Media Player?

If you are referring to Windows Media Player, then don't touch it. Media
Center does not render it obsolete.
If you are referring to some media player that came with your 3rd party MPEG
decoder, then yes you can remove it. You don't need it.

Winkey+r. Type msconfig. Press Enter. Disable Media Player on the Startup
tab.

But it appears, Jason, that one can trash the icon for the media player,
which is what I did. Now I have no desktop icon for Media Player 11. How do I
create the icon when the program isn't even listed in the program list?

Media Player is sometimes in Start > All Programs >Accessories > Windows
Media Player

If the shortcut is not there, you can add it.

My Windows Media Player is located here:

Target: (in short cut)
"C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe" /prefetch:1
