- More than a month later, my Xbox 360 still won't connect to my MCE
- Posted by Gabriel on January 11th, 2006
I was receiving help from Rob Lehew [MSFT] and b Bowman when they both
simultaneously gave up on the problem.
I don't understand their motive, but I do understand that my problem isn't
fixed.
Let's recap:
My MCE computer is home built, and both it and the Xbox 360 are wired to a
Westell Versalink 327w:
Model Number B90-327W15-06
Serial Number 05B403716504
Software Version VER:03.02.01
Software Model 4 Port Gateway
Description WireSpeed Data Gateway
Boot Loader VER:03.02.00a
Configuration 096-900096-00A
Port forwarding, purchasing an alternate router and turning off the
Versalink's routing capability, disabling all start up apps, uninstalling
NOD32, and uninstalling Nintendo's USB connector did fix the problem.
After attempting said solutions all help ceased entirely.
When running the installation, my MCE PC will begin looking for the Xbox
360. After a small amount of time it will say it failed to find it. The
Xbox 360 and MCE PC fail to communicate any information between each other.

I figured this was a software related issue and Microsoft would end up
releasing a patch in the future, however it's been over a month and there's
been no news of an update.
Thanks in advance for ANY support and advice anyone can offer.

I found what I believe is the thread you're referring to. Recapping what I
can parse out of that thread:
- Your only firewall software is the Windows Firewall; you do not have any
third-party firewall software
- Your only antivirus/antispyware utilities are NOD32 and Spy Sweeper; also,
you were not able to connect with NOD32 uninstalled (not just disabled)
- You do not have any additional third-party privacy, security center, or
intrustion detection software installed on your PC
Please confirm whether this is accurate. If it is, I have a few additional
questions/things to check:
- Do you have an Nvidia motherboard chipset (which offers hardware firewall
capabilities) in your Media Center PC?
- Open a command window, type "netsh" <enter>, "winsock" <enter>, "show
helper" <enter>, then paste the output here
- Run services.msc and check the status of the SSDP Discovery Service and
the Universal Plug and Play Device Host service (are they running?)
- Temporarily connect your Xbox 360 directly to your PC using an Ethernet
cable to bypass your home router and start fresh (to confirm if the issue is
due to your network hardware):
.. First, do the following on your Media Center PC:
.. 0) Go to www.xbox.com/pcsetup and re-download the Media Center
Extender software
.. 1) Uninstall the Media Center Extender software by going to Add/Remove
Programs under the Windows Control Panel
.. 2) Delete the DvcConn.log and DvcSetup.log files from c:\windows on
your Media Center PC
.. 3) Reboot your PC
.. Next, do the following on your Xbox 360:
.. 1) Go to the Xbox 360 dashboard-->System blade (purple
area)-->Computers-->Windows Media Center and choose "Disconnect"
.. 2) Back out to the top-level of the dashboard, go to the Media blade
(blue area), select Windows Media Center and continue forward
.. to get a new 8-digit code; write this code down
.. Finally, return to your PC and do the following:
.. 1) Install the MCX software and when prompted, type in the 8-digit
setup key you wrote down above
If you run into issues, please post the following:
- the contents of the new DvcConn.log and DvcSetup.log files
- the exact text of any error messages displayed on your PC and on your
Xbox 360
- the IP address of your Xbox 360
- the results of an ipconfig /all from your PC (paste in everything it
displays)
- the results from checking for winsock helpers (paste in everything it
displays)
- info regarding whether the SSDP and UPnP services are running

- I only use Windows Firewall
- My only antivirus is NOD32, and I was not able to connect with NOD32
uninstalled.
- I do not have other third-party privacy, security center, or intrusion
detection installed.
- I do not have an Nvidia motherboard chipset.

Connecting my Xbox 360 directly to my MCE PC and following your directions
did not work.

The services.msc list is sent.
I reviewed my eventvwr and didn't see anything out of the ordinary. Should
I be looking for a specific log?

I'm having the exact same problem as described... in the setup I see
that it's saying 'Verifying Setup Key...' for a few seconds, then goes
to the 'Xbox 360 Not Found' screen. Xbox live and Media Connect work
just fine... not Media Center...
Setup:
Windows Media Center edition w/ Rollup 2
..NET 1.1 w/ SP1
D-Link 624 Router (with live certified firmware)
NO firewalls are enabled (or have ever been installed)
The following is a snippet from c:\windows\DvcConn.log
---cut---
7:46:09 PM : Searching device table for unaffiliated bobsleds.
7:46:09 PM : Found 1 matching device(s).
7:46:09 PM : Found a device matching the security code. DVCID =
{00000000-0000-0000-0200-00125A3B1AC9}
7:46:10 PM : Sanity Check : Making sure device is not already
affiliated with this PC.
7:46:10 PM : Starting affiliation.
************************************************** *********
ERROR
************************************************** *********
Timed out waiting for affiliation status.
7:46:54 PM : Cancel confirmed by user.
7:46:54 PM : Resetting the device table entry to a clean state.
7:46:54 PM : Turning off the InOOBE flag.
7:46:54 PM : Exiting
---cut---
I can also verify that both the SSDP Discovery Service and
the Universal Plug and Play Device Host service are running.
I've been attempting to get this thing to work since launch. Any
ideas?

This is very strange. Looks like we will have to really dig into to discover
this issue.
Can you please both get a network trace and provide the export the media
center extender specific entries of your registry. Please send both of these
to
msft_mcx at hotmail
Instructions for sending a network capture are as follows:
1) download and install
http://www.analogx.com/contents/down...twork/pmon.htm (freeware) on your
Media Center PC that's experiencing the problem
2) go to the Windows desktop, Start menu, Programs, AnalogX, PacketMon
folder and start the "PacketMon" program
3) press the "Start" button in the upper-right corner of PacketMon
4) go through the setup on the Media Center and Xbo 360 to reproduce the
problem
6) on the Media Center PC, press the "Stop" button on PacketMon
7) go to the "File" menu of PacketMon and "Save As..." to a CSV file on your
machine
8) send the CSV file
Please complete the following to export the Media Center Extender registry
keys
1. Run regedit
2. Navigate to HKEY_Local_Machine\software\Microsoft\MediaCenterP eripheral
3. Right click on MediaCenterPeripheral and select Export.
4. Save the file type as Txt.
Thank You
