- Network congestion while using Xbox 360 Extender over WIRED network
- Posted by cameronwong@gmail.com on May 2nd, 2006
Hello everyone - all the posts related to network congestion appear to
be directed towards wireless networks. Does anyone have any experience
w/ getting network congestion errors over a WIRED network?
I have a wired network that a friend helped me setup since I'm not
really very knowledgeable about stuff like that. I've never had any
problems watching TV through the media center extender on my Xbox 360
until about 3 days ago.
I haven't made any changes to my setup, haven't installed anything new,
don't have any viruses on my computer, haven't pulled out any wires, or
anything else that I can think of. However, now when I watch TV I get
Network Congestion messages and the image/sound stutters. It seems to
do this every 30 seconds or so mixed in w/ 1 or 2 minutes of everything
working just fine.
The odd thing is that I can watch wmv's from my My Videos folder just
fine w/o any network congestion issues. (Is this because they are
smaller files?)
I have tried turning on/off my router, using the very useless Media
Center network monitor, and screaming at my computer - which isn't
helpful at all.
Would it be safe to assume that its a problem w/ either the cat5 wire
itself or possibly my router? One other thing, I only have 6% of
freespace in my C: drive. however I keep my Recorded TV shows on a
completely different drive.
thanks in advance for any assistance.

A couple of things:
- Ensure you have ~ 2 Gb of space available on your C: drive, as there may
be some temporary files written there. I don't know if this would affect
your situation, but you always want to keep sufficient space free on the
system drive.
- Check all of your network cables to ensure a good connection.
- Reboot the router and then the PC.
- Your tuner card may be failing.
- If you scream at the computer, ensure that you have a microphone connected
so that it can hear you.

Does Live TV play okay? Also, when you run the Media Center Extender
Network Performance Tuner, does it say your network has sufficient
bandwidth?
Couple things to try in addition to Ed's suggestions:
- Update your PC's Ethernet card drivers to the latest version available
from your PC OEM's website
- Change your Ethernet card to 100 mbps full duplex if it's set to Auto
Detect or vice versa:
.. 1) Right click My Computer, select Manage, click Device Manager
.. 2) Expand Network adapters; double-click your network card
.. 3) Select the Advanced tab
.. 4) Select Link Speed & Duplex; what is the Value? Try changing it to
100Mbps/Full Duplex
