OK, help a noob out here

Can someone lay out for me exactly what and how a MCE machine functions?
I've never seen one in action, and am having a bit of trouble visualizing
it. Does it sit in your living room near the TV / Display? What are the
typical hookups, and how in hell does a TV tuner card help you, especially
if you are on cable or (like me) satellite. One point in particular confuses
me: if my PVR is programmable via my satellite link (which is proprietary),
how can a PC replicate this? As you can see, I'm clueless about this. I've
visited a few sites, but they all seem to assume some understanding beyond
what I possess. TIA.
