- Playing VOB file in Media Center
- Posted by rringer on May 21st, 2006
I would like to play a VOB file in Media Center.
I have converted DVD's to my hard drive, and they play fine.
Now I would like to try something different. I have Music Video Files which
are just one single VOB file. I can associate VOB with WinDVD, and I can
play them on the Media Center PC in WinDVD, but I can not play them in "My
Video" from within Media Center (like I can with the converted DVD's on the
hard drive).
I have made a shortcut to the Music Video directory (like I did with the
DVD's on the hard drive). I get one of two results (by changing the
registry). I either do not see the files when I go into that folder from
within Media Ceter / My Video's or I see the file, but when I try to play it,
it won't play.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Actually playing a vob file is much easier than playing with the registry. Im
playing them right now on my MCE. Just rename the vob file to avi. That will
make the trick

Thanks Diego, simply renaming the VOB file to AVI did the trick.
Is there anyway of having thumbnail pictures appear along with the file name
in Media Center (like with MPG's).
Thanks.

I wouldnt know how to make that happen. Yet something that looks good is to
add a thumnail on the folder containing the file. Just add a jpg file in the
folder and rename it as folder.jpg that will make the folder show the
thumnail.

couldn't you just associate the vob file type with media player?

Well its been a while since ive done that Ill try it and let ya know. When i
tried it a while ago on a dvd backup, media player was pretty random in
choosing the language so i had no warranty in what language i would see the
file. If your vob files are just taken from a digital cam thats fine with
just one language.. they work.
