Playing XVID and DivX in MCE2005
Posted by bzamfir@gmail.com on October 3rd, 2005

Hi,

I try to build a MCE2005, using a Asus Pundit barebone (SIS 650/651
Video chipset).
I set it first on 16 MB RAM, than changed up to 64 MB RAM
I installed FFDSHOW filter, and I can use it to play on both Media
Player 10 and RealOne player. But I cannot play in MCE.
Even if I see the thumbnail of the video in MCE interface, I get the
message "Files needed to display video are not installed or not working
correctly. Please restart Media Center or restart the computer"

Can anyone tell me how to fix this?

Thank you
Bogdan

You are going to need a better video card that the onboard video offered by
your motherboard.

In addition to that, you are going to need a supported DVD decoder for
MCE2005 TV watching features.

In addition to that you are going to need a TV tuner.

Post more specs of your hardware and will can help you out.

Before spending more money, you may try and just install a codec.
Look for koepi's xvid directshow codec (=google) and see how it goes.
FWIW: I used to run ffdshow for this purpose but I had problems with it -
compared to the above mentioned.

If still nothing works - buckeyboy is correct.

Hi,

I have a little progress with this. First, I set the memory for my
video card to 64 MB (before I tested with 16 or 32). Then I download
and installed latest SIS driver for mz card, from SIS website
(univga3_368).
After that, when I start MCE, I don't get the error message anymore.
Also, I see all interface transitions and effects, and I can play both
XVID and the DVD tests used when setting monitor. GREAT!
BUT (because there is a BUT), this works only if I have MCE interface
as window. If I have it full screen, I see a blank screen, but still I
can see the mouse moving.
However, I installed some HTML plugins (like mceWeather.exe), and if I
have it active in MCE and move to full screen, I can see it, but it is
surrounded by black area, where should be the image of MCE own
interface. So it seems now the problem is, when in full screen, MCE
uses some layer or overlay or something that is not properly display.
Does anyone encountered this?

Thank you

The add ons for media center don't work too well. The problem is that the
visual settings information is not passed on to the add-ons, so you get these
horrible visual problems with everything that goes outside the main visual
system ( Such as weather information, or HP iTunes music support, basically
all other applications) I would hope this problem would be fixed with that
update you keep hearing about. But I wouldn't count on it. I expect to have
to wait until Vista's Media Center add on for any real progress.
