- Problem connecting with Xbox Media Center Extender
- Posted by Allegro on October 6th, 2005
Hi,
I was thinking of purchasing an Xbox Media Center Extender and a friend lend
me his so i could test if it would work.
I tried both the original and the update for the xbox extender, but kept
having problems connecting between the pc and the xbox.
Since i was using a modem/router with internal firewall, a wireless
connection with my pc and a wired xbox, there is just so much that could be
wrong..
Especially since i also used the Windows Firewall and BlackIce Pc Protection..
So i decided, first things first, let's try the direct option (pc-xbox NIC
to NIC using scrossover networkcable) and go from there..
I also disabled ALL firewalls.
Now it seemed to connect, but lost connection after displaying these
messages..
"Your computer is currently in heavy use by another user or device, and has
few if any resources to devote to an additional user or device.
If you continue, both your experience and that of the other user or device
may be unnacceptably degraded.
Press OK to continue."
Just after that i recieve this message..
"The Media Center Extender for Xbox has unexpectedly disconnected from the
Media Center PC.
The Extender requires a connection to the computer.
The Extender might have been disconnected because of network congestion,
a network disconnection, or because the PC was turned off.
Press OK to reconnect."
My network connection seems stable, i tested them. Also, i'm using a high
quality network/utp cable..
Also, even if i close all unessential apps, etc on my pc i keep getting the
'heavy use' message..
I tried all networking settings i could think off, DHCP, manual.. (Dashboard
network settings and on pc)
If i use DHCP/Automatic, Windows has degraded or no connection
possibilities, but the xbox seems to connect until the crash.
If i use the standard network settings (192.168.0.1, etc) which seem to work
just fine from the dashboard, i get the message there is a connection but
that there is a problem (ip of extender 169.254.65.99 instead of the range i
assigned) and will not work.
If i try an ip like in the range the Extender is assigned, i just get the
messages as earlier..
This is as far as i've got, i've also tried changing the Extenders ip from
within Windows (Media Center Extender Manager), but that didn't work..
Is there a standard setting/ip adress i could try, which should work no
matter what?
Never had so much problems connecting 2 devices..
Thanks,
Allegro.

Few questions:
1) Is your Media Center PC an HP Digital Entertainment Center?
2) Are there any errors in the Application, System, or Security Event Viewer
logs (right click My Computer --> Manage) corresponding to the time that you
tried to connect?
3) Can you provide more information regarding how you configured your Xbox
when you saw the message telling you that its IP address was 169.254.65.99

Hi,
Thanks for the reply.
1. No, it's a Dell Dimension.
2. No, they say "AffConfirm RQ - Device
{00000000-0000-0000-0000-0050F265B2F3} - Successfully affiliated."
However, i never got in.
3. The IP was 169.254.65.199. It was connected directly from pc to xbox by a
crossed network cable.
I will if it would connect on a fresh install tommorow, i'll just backup and
use my original Dell OS disc to get up and running and see if it connects
then..
If i just connect the xbox to the pc with a crossed UTP cable, it should
work, right?
Without entering any settings in the xbox or pc?
Thanks,
Allegro.

You are correct - if you use a cross-over cable, you should be able to
connect without changing any networking settings provided that your PC and
Xbox are both set to acquire an IP address dynamically or are both set with
a static IP address in the same subnet. In the former case, they'll roll
over to Auto IP and obtain 169.x.x.x addresses.
Double-checking - did you check all three event logs?

I've got a brand new HP Digital Entertainment Center running MCE 2005.
I also have the same problem connecting my XBOX extender. XBOX is found but
during connecting it simply will not connect.
No firewalls etc, I removed pre installed Norton and disabled SP2 fw. All
updates are made. Tested without router(DGL-4300) Nothing seems to work.
What could be the my problem?
I tested to to connect the XBOX when no account was logged in.
Result: A windows logon Message was displayed in at XBOX tv: The terminal
server has exceeded the maximum number of allowed connections
Thanks a lot in advance

It sounds like there's an issue with the Terminal Services functionality on
your Media Center PC. Are you able connect to this PC via Remote Desktop
from a second PC in your house? (you can download the Remote Desktop Client
app from http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/p...rdclientdl.asp)

I'm able to use Remote Desktop Client.
However my problem was solved by downloading and installing Externder
Software for XBOX 360 from XBOX 360 site found in this newsgroup.
Thanks for help anyway

Are you saying you used the Externder Software for XBOX 360 on a regular Xbox
(ie. not Xbox 360)? I am having the same problem getting my original Xbox to
connect to my MCE system and am wondering if you found a solution I wouldn't
expect to work.

The extender software for the Xbox 360 will support older extenders (i.e.
Xbox Extender and V1 Media cetner extenders).
If you have MCE 2005 with Update Rollup 2 installed and working, download
the extender bits from here
http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...CELite-ENU.exe
If you don't have Update Rollup 2 installed, or Update Rollup 2 might not be
installed properly, download the extender bits from here.

Yes, and obviously the PC software is suppoded to work with other extenders
than 360 as well, looking at it's menus.
I believe the 360 pc software made some additionally updates (=bugfix) of my
MCE machine during installation that made it work.
My guess is that the same protocol is used for all kind of extenders?

I finally got all the new updates installed - rollup 1 on the xbox and the
xbox 360 (per below) on the PC side. Now the xbox won't connect. I have
tried uninstalling and reinstalling the PC side, but same result with the old
or new software. the extender was connected via the original setup. do the
new updates create a problem with the hp digital entertainment center? am i
doing something in the wrong order?
any advice?

ok, tried that...nothing. the setup runs through verifiying the setup key
but then errors when trying to connect.
does it make any difference that the xbox is giving me a new setup key each
time I try to connect it. i assume this is correct.
anything else i can try? i turned off the hp installed symantec firewall
and the windows firewall has everything media center allowed.

tried the fix below from todd and now the setup fails at 'verifying the setup
key'...before it made it past this step and failed.
any thoughts?
todd's fix ------------------------
First, eject the MCX disc from the Xbox (open the disc tray)
Next, do the following on your Media Center PC:
1) Open the MCX Manager (Start --> All Programs --> Accessories --> Media
Center --> Media Center Extender Manager)
2) In the list of devices, select Media Center Extender for Xbox and click
Properties
3) Click Remove, and then click OK.
4) Reboot your PC
5) Open regedit (Start --> Run, "regedit", <enter>) and navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\MediaCenterP eripheral\DeviceTable; are
there any entries under DeviceTable? (they'd look like
"00000000-0000-0000-xxxx-xxxxxxxxx" where the x's are lots of letters and
numbers). If you see such entries, delete them.
Next, do the following on your Xbox:
1) From the Xbox dashboard, select Memory; click A to select the Xbox hard
drive
2) Select MCX for Xbox from the list of game titles that appears and press A
3) Press A to delete the stored information for MCX for Xbox; select Yes and
press A to confirm
4) Place the MCX game disc in the disc try and close the disc tray
5) When the Welcome screen appears, write down the setup key that is
displayed on screen.
Finally, return to your PC, open the MCX Manager, select Add a New Extender
from the File menu, and type in the 8-digit setup key.
